Lesson Plan in Science
I. Objectives: When asked, the students will be able to:
1. Identify the organ used for each of the five senses.
2. Identify objects in accordance with each of the five senses
3. Create a paragraph, at least 3 sentences long, using three of the five senses
II. Topic: Enhancing Observational skills through the five senses and paragraph
writing.
Material List:
1. Audio (sound of a barking dog, sound of an ambulance, sound of birds, sound of
noisy street)
2. A bottle of perfume
3. Students data collection sheet
III. Opening Activity
Ask the students, “How do you think you could name and describe an object if you
were unable to see it?” Have the students close their eyes and see if they can identify the
following objects just by their smell or their sound. Play small sections of any sound (like
barking dog, chirping bird etc.) and see whether or not the students are able to identify and
describe the sounds. Pass around a container or a paper sprayed by a perfume to each of
the students. Ask whether or not they are able to identify the scent.
IV. Main Activity:
1. The students are going to take a walking trip around their class garden, school mini
park or school garden. During this time, the students will be asked to find an object
that can be experienced through each of the five senses. The students’ descriptions
will be kept on a data collection sheet. (*Note: the students should not attempt to
taste objects they are observing)
2. Upon returning, the students will use their observations to create a paragraph. The
paragraph should describe a singular object and must contain four of the five senses.
3. Once the students have written their paragraphs, the class will discuss some of the
ways the students described their items. Next, the instructor will explain a
description of an object called an adjective because it is adding new ideas to the
noun or pronoun. An adjective is part of the speech that describes something. They
often answer the question, which one, what kind, what colour, etc.
4. After a short discussion on adjectives, the students will return to their poem and
attempt to identify the adjectives they used. This will be done by underlining the
adjectives throughout their paragraph.
V. Modeling:
The teacher will pick up an item and demonstrate to the students how you can describe
the object using the five senses. The teacher should also draw attention to the example
of paragraph listed on the students’ data collection sheet.
VI. Checks for Understanding:
Ask a student to identify the five senses (seeing, hearing, touching and smell) ask the
students to think of the various ways they may describe something in the classroom.
VII. Key Questions:
1. What are the five senses? (seeing, hearing, touching, tasting, smelling)
2. What are some ways you can use adjectives to describe the world around you?
(various answers)
3. How does your perception change when looking to nature close-up instead of from
far away? (various answer)
4. How do you think you would use your five senses if we were at a park and not in a
forest? (various answers)
VIII. Evaluation:
The students’ data collection sheet will be used for evaluation purpose. This will allow
the teacher to see whether the students were able to identify various objects that
correspond to four of the five senses.
The students’ paragraph will be used to assess their use of the five senses and their
observational skills. The students’ paragraph should contain adjectives that are
representative of four of the five senses.
IX. Closure:
After the students have been given time to write their poems and identify the
adjectives, they may share their findings in the class. The teacher should then
relate the topic to the future lesson. The class may also wish to discuss the plant
and animals or insects found in the mini park or garden.
