Lesson Plan in Science 4
I. Objective
A. Content standard:
The learners demonstrate understanding of how light, heat and sound travel using various objects.
B. Performance Standard:
The learners should be able to demonstrate conceptual understanding of properties/ characteristics of
light, heat and sound.
C. Learning competency:
The learners should be able to investigate properties and characteristics of light and sound. S4FE-IIIh-5
II. SUBJECT MATTER
A. Lesson 55. Investigating characteristics of Sound
Activity 3: How do bats find their way and locate their food?
B. References:
Science Learner's Materials 4 Lesson 55: Investigating the Characteristics of Sound pages 229- 231
C. Science Ideas:
D. Process Skills:
Observing, Inferring, describing, listening
E. Materials
Two paper towel tubes
Flat walls ( the walls of the classroom could be used)
Comic strips
F. Value Focus
a. cooperative in performing group activity.
b. caring for the living things like bats.
III. Learning Task.
A. Engagement
1. Review:
What did you observe when you clapped you’re your hand? What made you hear the sound you
produced? What do you call the sound that bounced.
2. Let the pupils close their eyes. Play different sounds of musical instruments. Let them identify
each instrument.
Is it easy to identify the instrument using only the sound it produces?
B. Exploration:
1. Let the pupils read the comic strip and answer the questions that follow by group.
2. Each group will present their answer to class.
C. Exploration:
1. What important property of sound was presented in the comic strips?
2. How do bats locate their food or determine their direction?
3., How do bats make use of the sound waves or echoes bouncing back to them?
4. How do you describe echolocation?
D. Elaboration:
What is echolocation?
Value Focus: What make you answer the activity correctly?
Do bats play important role in our environment ? What will you do to balance our nature?
E. Evaluation:
Investigate the following properties and characteristics by answering true or false.
Write True if the statement is correct and false if it is wrong.
_____1. Echo is the term used for the sound that is reflected back to its source.
_____2. Bats used echolocation to locate their food and determine their direction.
_____3. Only animals have the ability to use echolocation.
_____4. The sea floor is mapped using echolocation.
_____5. Some individual has developed to used echolocation and thus able to see even if they
are blind.
V. Assignment:
Investigate what other animals use echolocation aside from bats.
