LPG TANK TRUCKS: REQUIREMENTS OF SAFETY
FOR DESIGN/FABRICATION AND FITTINGS
All LPG tank trucks should meet the
requirements of the Motor Vehicle Acts and
Regulations and Static & Mobile Pressure
Vessels (Unfired) Rules, 1981 as amended from
time to time.
3
Fittings:
LPG tank truck is provided with the following
openings/nozzles:
• Safety Relief valves (Two Nos).
• Excess flow check valves in the liquid and vapour lines.
• Pressure gauge (Provided in the vapour space of the vessel)
• Temperature gauge (Provided in the liquid space)
• Rotogauge (to measure the percentage of liquid in the vessel.
• Manhole with cover.
• Drain point at the bottom.
• Liquid/Vapour manifold.
4
Safety Relief Valve:
Safety Relief Valve:
There shall be minimum two safety relief valves
with each one sized to suit the full relieving
capacity of the vessel. The design and operation
of Safety Relief Valves shall conform to the
provision of SMPV rules as amended from time
to time.
SRV shall be so installed that it does not project
out of the top surface of the vessel. If necessary,
recessed cup formation on vessel shall be made
to house the SRV.
The safety relief valves shall be installed at the top
surface around the central portion of the vessel
5
Liquid / Vapour Connections:
Liquid / Vapour Connections:
1 no. 50 mm size liquid inlet / outlet and 1
no. 40 mm size vapour connection shall
be provided at the bottom of the vessel.
The vapour line shall extend internally
with a clearance of 50 mm from the top of
the vessel surface.
6
Internal Valve with Excess Flow Check
Internal Valve with Excess Flow Check
Valve
Valve
Internal valves with EFCV of appropriate
ratings shall be installed on LPG liquid
and vapour line
7
Liquid Level Gauging Device - Roto Gauge
Liquid Level Gauging Device - Roto Gauge
The vessel shall be equipped with a liquid level
gauging device for ready determination of liquid
level in the vessel at any time. The liquid level
gauging device shall be of the direct level gauge type
with zero leakage of product to atmosphere. The
design shall be such that the unit encompasses a
tough, durable steel shock absorber to prevent
transfer of any vibrations sustained in transit.
This liquid level gauging device shall be located on
the shell near the midpoint /top upper half of the
vessel in a recessed cup formation.
To avoid damage to this liquid level gauging device, a
suitable hinged cover shall be provided.
8
Pressure Gauge
Pressure Gauge &
& Temperature Gauge
Temperature Gauge
1 No. dial type (100 MM) glycerine filled pressure
gauge with EFCV shall be provided on the rear
dished end in the vapour space. This shall be
protected by 10 mm thickness U-type shield metal
plate.
The range of the pressure gauge shall be from
zero to 21 kg/sq. cm (min.) gauge.
1 No. Dial type temperature gauge to be provided.

GENERAL SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS
4. The fuel tank to be protected from external
blows by stout steel guards.
5. Safety Equipments:
The vehicles shall carry the following:
a) A First Aid box.
b) 2 nos. 10 Kg DCP (ISI marked fire extinguishers (ISI
marked).
c) Leather hand gloves and heat resistant hand gloves.
d) Safety Goggles
e) 2 nos. red flags
f) Emergency kit approved by CCOE.
g) TREM card.
In addition, each vehicle must carry non-metallic tools, wooden plugs of
appropriate size and sealing compound for any emergency.

PURGING
PURGING
After completion of hydro and pneumatic
tests, the bullet shall be purged safely by
authorised persons, and only then it
should be taken for Loading.

UNLOADING OF BULK LPG
UNLOADING OF BULK LPG
TANK TRUCKS
TANK TRUCKS
Unloading of LPG from tank truck is carried out
with vapour compressors using pressure
differential method of liquid transfer. The
compressor shall be placed at the unloading
point with the following facilities:
(i) Vapour line with isolation valves
(ii) Product transfer line with isolation valves
(iii) Weigh bridge of suitable capacity
13
• All electrical equipment/ lighting are of flameproof type
• Vapour vent line should be for individual bay at 1.5 M
height above the eaves of the shed fitted with flame cap
• Fire Extinguishers, shall be positioned as an immediate
aid to fight fire.
• No hot work/ cold work is carried out in the vicinity of
unloading operation.
• Checks shall be carried out for each T/T and T/W prior to
unloading of LPG as per check list .

TRUCKS
1. Checks essential for plant safety shall be carried out for
each Tank Truck Before its entry to the licensed area .
2. Tank pressure, temperature and weight of filled tank
truck shall be recorded before Unloading.
3. Tank shall be placed in drive out position with entire
tank truck consisting of bullet and engine covered by
sprinklers.
4. After placement, engine as well as master control switch
shall be switched off and minimum four wooden chokes
shall be placed under wheels.

5. Following shall be connected -
• Chassis and bullets both are to be earthed independently
for which bare metal cleats to be provided.
• Earth pits should meet IS:3043, Earth Resistant should be
<1 ohm.
• Liquid and vapour hoses to tank trucks after examining the
integrity of gaskets and using proper studs. Bolts and nuts
are not be used.
• Earthing lines to tank bare metal or earthing point to tank.

6. The tank truck valves shall be crack opened and ensured
there are no leaks. The working of EFCV to be tested by
opening valve at once to give sudden flow.
7. After the above, unloading should be done with LPG
compressor by differential pressure method.
8. Pressure and level in the tank truck shall be monitored
at regular intervals so that it does not exceed safe limits.
After decanting all liquid LPG, close the valve of liquid
line of the bay. Thereafter, LPG vapour should be
recovered such that vapour pressure in the tank truck is
brought down to 1.5 kg/cm2
minimum but not below
atmospheric pressure.

9. On completion of unloading, following operations shall be
done in sequence:
 Isolate rigid liquid and vapour lines of bay by closing the
valves and stop LPG compressor.
 Close the valves of liquid/ vapour lines of the tank truck.
Depressurise the hose through high vent - close vent
valve.
 Remove hose connections, electrical bonding wires.
 Cap the vapour/ liquid outlet lines of tank trucks.
 Remove chokes placed under wheels.
10. Record the weight of empty tank truck along with
rotogauge, pressure gauge and temperature gauge
readings.
