CUR/545 UsingTechnology forTeaching and Learning
August 7, 2017
Dr. Cheryl Franklin
Why integrate technology in the
classroom?
Used as a tool to promote and extend
student learning
Technology engages students and creates
active learners
Not all students l3earn the same way,
technology promotes individual learning
Improves communication. Students
collaborate with their peers using
technology.
Technology creates educational experiences
that would not be possible otherwise.
(Maloy,Verock, Edwards, &Woolf, 2017, pp. 4)
Facilitating Group Activities with
Technology
 “Communication and collaboration
focus, engage, and motivate students”
(Maloy, et.al, pp, 62).
 Technology enables groupwork and
supports collaboration in different ways
(pp. 63).
 Promotes active learning in classrooms.
 “Group activities with technology
creates new patterns of engagement and
collaboration for students and teachers”
(pp. 74).
Facilitating Group Activities with
Technology
 All members have access to edit and
make revisions to their respective
parts.
 Team members have access to the
same presentation to brainstorm and
share ideas from anywhere across the
globe.
 Comments are live and are placed
within the presentation.
 To eliminate confusion, everyone
works on the same presentation.
Conducting Research with Technology
Teachers should sort through
age-appropriate and relevant
material to be used by
students.
Teachers must help students to
evaluate web content resulting
from online searches.
“Teachers teach students how
to research information and to
become responsible digital
citizens” (pp. 102)
Conducting Research with Technology
Using technology helps
students to find reliable
sources.
• Introduce students to search sites
designed for students
• Teach students to critically
evaluate search results
• UseVisual SearchTools
The Internet is the world’s
largest and linked document
collection.
Communicating Final Projects with Technology
Technology allows for students to
publish their work in a variety of
creative formats. Technology
presents an opportunity for students
to demonstrate their knowledge of
the learned content.
Visually attractive
Engaging and creative
Instant feedback
Managing a single computer classroom
 Use an overhead projector or
LCD panel
 Use theTV as monitor
 Students work together in
teams to complete tasks
 Use the computer for
differentiated instruction.
Rotate students to make sure
everyone has an opportunity
to use.
Managing a multi-computer classroom
Provides a lot of
opportunities for group
work
One computer can be
shared with a group of
students
Students can engage with
other students in the class
at the same time
Managing Handheld Devices
 The teacher needs to discuss the
expectations and guidelines for
using the handheld devices in
the classroom.
 Assign specific roles to the
group members if there isn’t
enough devices for everyone to
access for the activities.
 Actively monitor students use of
the handheld devices.
Managing iPads, Tablets, or Laptops
 Integrate into the instructional day.
 Monitor students use for staying on task
and accessing appropriate websites.
 Review guidelines and procedures for
using the technology.
 Have a Plan B set aside when the
technology isn’t cooperating or not
available.
 Have a system in place for storing and
retrieving devices for use.
