Material
development

MATERIAL
• The term material is used to refer to anything which is used by
teachers or learners to facilitate the learning of a language.
• Cassettes, videos, cd-Roms, dictionaries, grammar books, workbooks,
photocopied exercise, food packages, photographs, live talk by invited
native speakers, instruction given by a teacher, task written on cards
or discussions between learners.
• Anything which is deliberately used to increase the learners’
knowledge and/or experience of the language.
MATERIALS DEVELOPMENT
• Anything which is done by writers, teachers or learners to provide
sources of language input and to exploit those sources in ways which
maximise the likehood or intake.
• The supplying of information about and/or experience of the
language in ways designed to promote language learning.
• Two vital questions:
• What should be given to the learners?
• What can be done with it to promote language learning?
MATERIAL EVALUATION
• Attempts to measure the value of materials. In many cases this is
done impressionistically and consists of attempts to predict whether
or not the materials will work, in the sense that the learners will be
able to use them without too much difficulty and will enjoy the
experience of doing so.
LANGUAGE TEACHING
• Anything which is done by material developers or teachers to
facilitate the learning of the language.
• It includes a text book providing samples of language use and guiding
learners to make discoveries from them.
LANGUAGE LEARNING
• Language learning can be explicit (the learners are aware of when and
what they are learning)
• Language learning can be implicit (the learners are not aware of when
and what they are learning)
• Language learning can be declarative knowledge (knowledge about
the language system)
• Language learning can be procedural knowledge (knowledge of how
the language is used)
