Create and build mechanical devices.
Mainly with HVAC or machine design.
HVAC – Heating, ventilation & air-conditioning
Machine design: on hardware, including automobile
engines, computers, and washing machines.
What is Mechanical
Engineering?
Deals with the technology of electricity.
Electrical engineers work on components, devices and
systems such as microchips and power station generators.
Examples: Security system, lighting point, electrical
substation.
What is Electrical
Engineering?
 Client comes out with conceptual brief.
 Architect provide schematic design.
 Meeting consist of:
Client’s manager
Architect
Civil and Structure engineer (C&S)
Mechanical and Electrical engineer (M&E)
Quantity Surveyor (QS)
Landscape Architect
Interior Designer
Acoustic consultant
Environmental consultant
PROCESS OF A PROJECT
C&S engineer design road and drainage, retaining wall,
sewerage.
C&S engineer designs the frame of building by coordinating with
the M&E engineer.
Building plan ready and submitted to local authority for
approval.
QS prepare the bill of quantity
 to incorporate the requirements in the tender documentation.
M&E engineer prepares the schedule of prices for tenderer.
Tenderer
 issues the tender documents and drawings
analyse the given documents before construction process starts.
Constructions can be started after appointing a contractor.
Site meetings
to discuss details of the process such as Clarification and suitable
ways for installation.
Testing and Commissioning:
Check, inspect and test project component.
C.C.C (Certificate of Completion Compliance) is issued
Roles of Mechanical & Electrical Engineers in construction:
PRE-CONSTRUCTION
 Analyze arcitect’s
drawings
 Advise client the
suitability and
appropriateness of the
equipment
 Incorporate their
respective requirements
into architecture
drawing
 Eg. Location of AC, types
of lifts, fire system layout
DURING CONSTRUCTION
 Supervise the process of
construction.
 To ensure there is no error in
the process of construction.
POST CONSTRUCTION
 Operation and manual
documentation
 Test and commissioning
 Maintenance
 To ensure safety of end
user

 Noise
 Limit
 Design tolerance
 Time scale
 Economic issues
 Cost
 Building Regulation
 Fire protection
2. Concept Design
 Satisfy clients key
success criteria
 Comply with the
current statutory
legislation
 Eg. Building
regulation
3.Design Brief
 Clarification:
future scope of
services, actual
scope of work,
design
deliverables,
unique project
requirements
 Confirmation:
technical basis,
design standards
4.Scheme Design Stage
 Producing and
analyzing the design

result
 If its not satisfying, its
being revise

6. Construction
Design Information
 Detail drawings
are used to
facilitate during
the construction
process
7. Construction
 Process of building
8. Design Feedback
 To improve
current and
future projects
 Benefits:
Ensuring a
better
understanding of
client’s
requirements
5. Detail Design Stage
 Specific calculation is
implemented into the
drawings
 Eg. Pipework, electrical
load, smoke extract
ventilation, energy
consumption
