                            technology

19
Contribution to Even Better Standards
     Standards are important
The DVB (Digital Video Broadcast) standard protects end-users
from vendor lock-in and provides freedom of choice

Evolution is good for our industry
DVB evolutions like DVB-S to DVB-S2 provided
                                  20-30% OPEX reduction for broadcasters

Newtec contributes to a more efficient DVB-S2
Newtec contributes to DVB to establish an evolution that further optimizes satellite capacity usage
Newtec actively supports standardization of Carrier ID (CID)

Modulation beyond DVB-S2

21
Using ACM & Ka-Band
Adaptive Bit-Rate in Contribution & Exchange

                                         Fading more pronounced in Ka-Band
                 Fading but bandwidth is cheaper

Extra B/W Extra B/W ? Extra bandwidth, same cost, how to use?

Guaranteed Minimum Bandwidth ✔ Constant Bit-Rate (CBR) Live Video

Tackling Interference by Design
     Automated networks inherently “interference friendly”

       Terminal installation & certification

       Eliminating the „repetitive manual‟ errors

Ongoing „calibration sessions‟ to monitor & adjust parameters

       Transmission block of „bad citizens‟

       No „FWD lock‟ = no transmission

Editor's Notes

  • #2: IntroductionChange never occurred so rapidly in our industry as todayBackflash Serge (Belgacom)… satellite will be replaced by fiber (1994)But HTS, efficiency technologies have changed the gameAmount of capacity in the sky has never been so big & will explode in the upcoming years thanks to HTSSatellite has a life next to terrestrial (complimentary)NEWTEC: exciting year full of introductions of new products & breakthrough technologies
  • #3: Intro slideToday I’m going to talk about multi-service technologies, in video networksWe are at IBC, our focus is ‘broadcast’As you can see it is about of lot of thingsBut what are we actually talking about?
  • #4: A multi-service network is ‘what it says on the can’There are many sources & types of content ingress. In broadcast, the typical contribution: SNGs, Fixed contributions, FNG It may be for sports, for newsgathering, for special events, whatever As well as contribution, there is the exchange & transfer of content & assets, trunking, post, …And it’s not just broadcasting: video’s everywhere, for reconnaissance, surveillance, SCADA monitoringThe consumption of this cotent can be channels for distribution, DTH, DTT, head-endsOther IP services like broadband access can be multiplexed onto the same networkThe all IP hybrid satellite & terrestrial networks are integrated in managed networks
  • #5: The multiservice networks are about moving content, whatever the content, moving it to where it needs to be, at anytimeIt’s also about doing it as a reliable optimized ‘hosted service’: offering attractive services & SLAs to users, that are cost-effective.It’s also about having a modular system that is flexible enough to meet specific customer needs, to be ‘fit for purpose’ It’s also about running a profitable commercial business
  • #6: Running a business is about ROI and business modelsIt about making money by generating revenues from providing services, new services that can enable new business modelsTo be profitable, costs need to be kept under control. A single and optimized infrastructure can lower the TCOA viable business has to survive over time and that means evolving towards tomorrows technologies, to stay relevant & keep ahead of the pack
  • #7: Running a business is about ROI and business modelsIt about making money by generating revenues from providing services, new services that can enable new business modelsTo be profitable, costs need to be kept under control. A single and optimized infrastructure can lower the TCOA viable business has to survive over time and that means evolving towards tomorrows technologies, to stay relevant & keep ahead of the pack
  • #8: Business use cases to generate more revenue on platform (multiple services): - Distribution, for permanent channels - Live contribution, typically day-time @ peak times. It is this that defines the required transponder capacity - As well as live, you can also support file services - Like program exchange, for instance transferred at night - And news clips & packages that have deadlines to meet during the day as well as night
  • #9: Not only can the storage be used to migrate Live workflows to File, the infrastructure can also be used to generate revenue from additional services
  • #10: Before: Existing networks on dedicated networksEach network was setup for a specific focus on their core applicationsThe step is too big for each individual network to expand, adding services
  • #11: After: Hosted servicesThe individual networks become ‘virtual networks’ on a hosted platform, operated by a service providerFor both the service providers & VNOs: - Provide capability to quickly offer new services to VN, adding revenue generations possibilities for both VNs & SPs - By providing flexible SLAs to the VNs, it allows them to grow as needed with dedicated & secured resources - By ensuring ‘commercially healthy’ and growing VNs, this generates long term revenues for the SP
  • #12: The revenues are ensured by integrated & automated accounting & billing for both service providers & VNOs
  • #15: The fundamental architecture to support a multi-service platform is a converged All-IP network infrastructure
  • #16: In an integrated network stack, all the layers technologies are optimized to obtain more efficiencyAdditionally, integration across the layers provide substantial gains.Using the the latest physical layers gain, like extensions to the DVB-S2 standard already provide good gainsBut as we traverse up the stack, the efficiency gains can be far greater: Merging disparate businesses onto one platform has major TCO benefits in business streamlining
  • #17: The single biggest cost of operating a satellite platform is the transponder bandwidth. This needs to be effectively managed for TCO & profitability. The key profitability parameter is “utilization rate of managed bandwidth”As well as the ‘regular’ bandwidth, used for permanent & occasional services, there can be needs for extra bandwith. For broadcasters, this is typically the case for sports like football/Olympics, special events (e.g. Summits), breaking news storiesDuring the introduction of new platforms, it takes time for services to be deployed and for users to adopt & use the platform‘Over provisioning’ for the maximum is just too expensive. Pay for the ‘right’ amount of bandwidth, which changes (grows) over time
  • #19: How many different networks & NOCs do you operate?Separate teams of transmission teams, video & audio teams, operational teamsReducing network operational costs by streamlining operations by consolidation of networks towards multi service networks
  • #20: In this world, staying still means going backwards. We all have to evolve and embrace tomorrows technology
  • #23: How to use that extra ACM Bandwidth?Other Best-Effort IP ServicesBest-Effort File TransferAdaptive Live Video, e.g. NewsgatheringLow-res proxy (prioritized) + high-res (buffered)Adaptive bit-rate have made strong inroads into distribution with MPEG-DASH, “smooth streaming” and the like. But in live contribution and exchange, CBR still reigns supreme & the industry is often conservative in a fast changing worldUsing ACM can give you extra bandwidth, which allows extra services to be offered, more revenues stream, if the services are what the market acceptsKa-band bandwidth can be considerably cheaper, but the rain fading is even more pronounced. Find for consumer services but is the availability high enough to contribute champions league in CBR without wasting all gains from Ka? The juries still out but workflows will need to evolveThere are obvious ways to use that bandwidth: other best-effort IP services and file transfers that don’t have tight deadlines, if it’s there by the morning that will be fine! But there are other possibilities. Take the example workflow: - Breaking new event & you’ve got a scoop - You’re guaranteed at least a low-res proxy version for the 6 o’clock news. It might look like BGAN but hey, it’s breaking news. - As the news story evolves by the 9 o’clock news, you’ve got the higher-res assets - And the transmission costs per minute are much lower, so you can afford to cover more news eventsWe are also doing tests of adapting the bitrate over Ka, adjusting the quality to the current bandwidth
