Recently, the Nipah Virus has been detected in parts of India, and given the seriousness of the illness, it is best to be informed and aware. The primary host for the disease is the fruit-bats of the Pteropodidae Family, Pteropus genus. In past outbreaks, a significant amount of new cases were caused by contact with people already infected by Nipah. A range of symptoms are associated with NiV including acute respiratory infection and encephalitis and the condition can be fatal. Preventive Measures & Infection Control To reduce chances of infection it is recommended that you avoid fruits bitten by bats or other animals, as well as ensure that food/ drink prepared in areas with large bat populations are prepared properly and hygienically.
