What Is the Nipah Virus?
The first step in preventive health is to be aware and to be prepared. Recently, the Nipah Virus has been detected
in parts of India, and given the seriousness of the illness, it is best to be informed and aware.
Nipah Virus Advisory
Enabling Lifetime Care
Symptoms
Nipah Virus Infection (NiV) is an infectious disease transmitted from
animals to humans and that can be dangerous to both.
The primary host for the disease is the fruit-bats of the Pteropodidae
Family, Pteropus genus. Fruit or animals bitten by the bat can be
infected as intermediaries, then passing on the infection to humans.
In past outbreaks, a significant amount of new cases were caused by
contact with people already infected by Nipah.
A range of symptoms are associated with NiV including acute
respiratory infection and encephalitis and the condition can be fatal.
In case of NiV infection, symptoms often detected are:
 Flu-like Symptoms including: Fever, Headache, Vomiting/Nausea,
Fainting, Muscle Pain, Sore Throat
 In some cases - Epileptic Fits
 Encephalitis - Brain Inflammation which can cause: Dizziness,
Drowsiness, Altered Conscious State.
Encephalitis and Seizures can result in life-threatening comas or have
long-lasting neurological effects.
If any such symptoms are noted, particularly in regions where previous
Nipah cases have been reported, kindly consult a medical professional at
the earliest.
Preventive Measures & Infection Control
To reduce chances of infection it is recommended that you avoid
fruits bitten by bats or other animals, as well as ensure that food/
drink prepared in areas with large bat populations are prepared
properly and hygienically.
Hands should be washed properly through the day, especially
after contact with known infected people.
For medical professionals or those attending the sick, gloves and
mask should be used.
Thank you for your time. We hope this helps you and your family stay informed, healthy, and empowered.
TREATMENT
There are currently no drugs or vaccines specific for NiV infection
although research is ongoing. Intensive supportive care is
recommended to treat severe respiratory and neurologic
complications.
How Does It Spread?
Nipah is currently known to
spread through the following:
 From fruit-bats to animals
through bites
 From eating fruits bitten by
fruit-bats
 Bodily fluid contact with
infected animals or
humans.
