Introduction As you may know, there are many types of computers, Including... Desktop computers and Notebook computers. In this class we are using Notebook computers Gregory Donaghy http://omegatec.webs.com/
Introduction Desktop computers consist of a Monitor, a case and a keyboard Gregory Donaghy http://omegatec.webs.com/
Introduction Notebooks also known as Laptops have all their components in a single piece of equiptment as opposed to Desktops or PC’s. Gregory Donaghy http://omegatec.webs.com/
Introduction Take a look at the computer in front of you. Look at all of the different parts of the computer and not Just the screen. You will notice that it also has a touchpad. This is in place of a mouse. Gregory Donaghy http://omegatec.webs.com/
Introduction Most offices use desktop computers and the case or Tower as it is sometimes called houses the working components of the computer. Gregory Donaghy http://omegatec.webs.com/
Tower Case All cases will have a power switch and an indicator usually lights to indicate it’s ON / OFF status. There will also be slots or drives where you can insert a CD RoM, DVD or in a few cases a Floppy drive Gregory Donaghy http://omegatec.webs.com/
Tower Case Floppy drives are all but obsolete, but are still used in some places for information backup. These have been replaced with CD RoM, DVD’s and USB pendrives. Gregory Donaghy http://omegatec.webs.com/
Disk & USB Drives You can write information to USB and CD RW, saving the data on them thus making the data stored on them very portable. Also seen here is an external Hard Drive Gregory Donaghy http://omegatec.webs.com/
CD RoM CD RoM stands for Compact Disk – Read only Memory. You can also get CD-RW which means you can write information and change it on the CD. RW stands for Re-write. Gregory Donaghy http://omegatec.webs.com/
In put Devices An in put device is anything that allows you to put information IN to the computer. Do you know of any In put devices? Gregory Donaghy http://omegatec.webs.com/
Input Devices They keyboard and the mouse are the most common input devices. A keyboard has over 100 keys and many keys have more than one function. Mice come in many shapes and some have different purposes. This mouse is a Trackball used for Computer Aided Design (CAD) Gregory Donaghy http://omegatec.webs.com/
Out put Devices Out put devices are any device which produces or gives OUT information to the user. Gregory Donaghy http://omegatec.webs.com/
Computer Hardware Computers are made up of many electrical components and parts. Each of these have specific tasks and work together to make the computer function properly. Most of these parts and components are stored inside your computer and are rarely seen by the user, except in cases of maintenence. Gregory Donaghy http://omegatec.webs.com/
Circuts The Motherboard is the largest of the circut boards and as it’s name suggest it is the mother to all of the other circut boards stored in your computer Gregory Donaghy http://omegatec.webs.com/
Motherboard You will find many slots and connectors varying in size and shape on the Motherboard . Each of these have different purposes, from RAM Memory to sound cards to the modem , through which your computer can connect to the Internet or other computers Gregory Donaghy http://omegatec.webs.com/
The Modem A Modem allows a computer to communicate with other computers, via a DSL phone line or wireless modem to a wireless broadband router (eg: Internet) Gregory Donaghy http://omegatec.webs.com/
CPU Central Processing Unit The CPU is like the Brain of the computer. It controls the computer and tells it what to do. The CPU is usually housed in a single chip called a Microprocessor as seen here. Gregory Donaghy http://omegatec.webs.com/
BIOS Basic Input Output System Gregory Donaghy http://omegatec.webs.com/
BIOS Basic Input Output System To put it quite simply........... The BIOS wakes your computer up!! Gregory Donaghy http://omegatec.webs.com/
RAM & RoM RAM stands for Random Access Memory , RoM for Read only Memory . RAM cards ( top right ) will remember what you tell it until you turn your computer off. It just speeds up the process by remembering the session that your in. ROM will always remember until you change the information or wipe it. It will not add to your processing speed. It is just your computers storage memory . Gregory Donaghy http://omegatec.webs.com/
Disk Drives As we seen earlier, some CD’s are Read only Memory RoM . So too is the internal H ard D isk D rive. They look quite similar too, except for the casing around the HDD and the arm that extends accross the disk. This is what reads the HDD Gregory Donaghy http://omegatec.webs.com/
Inside The Case Gregory Donaghy http://omegatec.webs.com/
Storage All computers have storage, nowadays it comes in GB’s . The computers Data is stored in the HDD in order to get this information to the CPU as fast as possible when it is needed. Storage devices come in many shapes and sizes. Gregory Donaghy http://omegatec.webs.com/
Bits & Bytes On or Off? All information travelling through your computer is based on 2 commands!! On or off . There are millions of combinations of On or off represented by 1’s and 0’s . Gregory Donaghy http://omegatec.webs.com/
Kilobytes to Gigabytes You will come across abbreviations like KB, MB, GB and TB . KB a Kilobyte is aprox 1,000 bytes. MB a Megabyte is aprox 1,000,000 bytes GB a Gigabyte is aprox 1,000 Million bytes TB a Terrabyte is aprox 1,000 billion bytes For example if you were to buy a new computer it may state that it comes with 500 GB of memory and 4 GB of RAM Gregory Donaghy http://omegatec.webs.com/
Computer Programmes Operating Systems Gregory Donaghy http://omegatec.webs.com/
Computer Programmes Operating Systems The most popular Operating Systems or OS’s are those manufactured by Microsoft as seen on the previous slide. But there are alternative OS’s available. Apple have MAC OSX Also there are open source OS’s by LINUX And Go og le are set to have there own OS as early as 2010 Gregory Donaghy http://omegatec.webs.com/
Computer Programmes Software Software are programmes that are used on your computer. For Eg: Microsoft Word will allow you to type letters plus much, much more. Skype will allow you to make calls from your computer provided you have an internet connection. Gregory Donaghy http://omegatec.webs.com/
