How to achieve higher accuracy results for Object Counting

                                                                   Article ID: GV-27-08-02-29
                                                                   Release Date: 2008/2/29
                                                                   Revision Date: 2008/4/21

The document is intended to provide helpful instructions and recommendations to ensure
accuracy of counting objects. The Object Counting function is covered in detail in Chapter 1 of
Surveillance System User’s Manual.

Camera Installation
Application: People Counting, Product Line Counting

1. The camera should be installed to the ceiling at least 2.5 meters above the floor. The
     camera should face straight down.

2. Position the camera in the middle of two defined detection zones so that the system can
automatically count people/objects when passing across.

Positioning the camera in the middle of two
                                                 defined detection zones.

3. Don’t install the camera in such an angle that the view of people/object size varies
     dramatically.

4. Make sure that no doors or any items are ever crossing the middle line where the camera
is installed. If a door is opened towards the camera, place the camera further away from
     the door.

GeoVision Inc. 1 Revision Date: 2008/4/21
5. Try to avoid placing the camera where it can be subjected to direct sunlight or reflections.
If sharp shadow edges are visible in the camera view, the count accuracy might be less
     than what it normally is.

6. If the camera has the features of Auto Gain Control (AGC) and Auto White Balance
     (AWB), disable them.

Application: Traffic Counting

1. Don’t install the camera in such an angle that vehicle views may be overlapped. It is
recommended to position the camera facing straight down, or try to install the camera at
the place as high as possible.

The view of the small vehicle is hindered by
     that of the big vehicle.

                         (X) (O)

2. Don’t install the camera in such an angle that the view of vehicle size varies dramatically.
It is recommended to position the camera facing straight down or try to install the camera
at the place as high as possible.

3. Try to avoid placing the camera where it can be subjected to direct sunlight or reflections.
If sharp shadow edges are visible in the camera view, the count accuracy might be less
     than what it normally is.

4. If the camera has the features of Auto Gain Control (AGC) and Auto White Balance
     (AWB), disable them.

GeoVision Inc. 2 Revision Date: 2008/4/21
Object Size Configuration

In order to make Object Counting work properly it is important to set the average size of
objects to be counted.

Click the Snapshot icon and a snapshot is taken so that you can define the Object Size.
After finishing other settings, click the Test button to view the live video from the camera and
check the counting accuracy.

1. If the function doesn’t count correctly, re-position your camera and make sure the Object
Size crossing the two defined detection zones is as constant as possible.

2. If the application sometimes counts objects twice, increase the defined Object Size.

3. If the application doesn’t count all of the objects that pass by under the camera, reduce
     the defined Object Size.

System Requirements

1. To use this application on 8 or more cameras, at least 512 MB memory and Pentium 4
Dual Core 2.13 GHz CPU are required.

2. Each channel requires at least 7 frames per second. The higher the frame rate, the more
accurate results the application will produce.
