Lesson 5: Online Assessment
Lesson Objectives After completing this Lesson, participants will: Define assessment. Identify the purpose of online assessment. Align online assessment methods with objectives. Choose the best online method of assessment for desired learning outcomes.
Focus Questions What is the purpose of assessment in online education? What are some methods for online assessment?
Defining Assessment “ Assessment is the process of evaluating student learning, instruction, and program effectiveness.” - Janet Donald, Improving the Environment for Learning
Purpose of Assessment Emphasize  what is important  and thereby motivate learners to focus on it. Help students  apply the material  learned in class. Identify what works and what doesn’t work, thus promoting the re-design and  improvement  of it. Ensure a  master of certain  knowledge and skills.
Aligning Assessment with Objectives IMPORTANT: Have a blueprint of how the elements of your subject should be aligned Objective = Content = Activities + Assessment From “Asseessing Open and Distance Learner” by Morgan and O-Reilly
Why Use Different Assements By using an assortment of assessment methods, you will address the students’ different learning styles and have more effective measures towards the intended learning outcomes.
