On how to build SDI using social networking principles in the scope of spatial planning and vocational education Karel Janecka 1 , Raitis Berzins 2 , Karel Charvat 3 , Andris Dzerve 2 kjanecka @ kma.zcu.cz 1 University of West Bohemia, Czech Republic 2 Institute of Mathematics and Computer Science, Latvia 3 Help Service Remote Sensing, Czech Republic
Why to build the SDI? INSPIRE directive defines the standards for future European Spatial Data Infrastructure The main concept of building of Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI) is : to move spatial data into web environment to use web services for building network of distributed geoportals .
Possible ways of SDI building
4 th way of SDI building There are many possible sources of information accessible through one access point on geoportal
GeoPortal4everybody & Social Networks From the technological point of view the focus is put among others on social networks as one of the main dissemination and communication tool . The main aim of this activity is to communicate (to give information and to retrieve some feedback) development through the geoportal. The retrieved feedback should serve as input information for further development.
GeoPortal4everybody & Social Networks Promoting of the content from the SDI-EDU geoportal (based on GeoPortal4everybody principles ) to social networks
Scheme of the Spider Net paradigm
GeoPortal4everybody concept is a place which allows users to search, view, examine and share spatial and non-spatial data is based on interoperability standards (OGC, W3C, OASIS, ISO) and principles: independent components, composition according to user requirements, based on SOA, possibility to integrate with other resources, maximum openness, open source, open standards, extension to non-GIS community, open search, administration of other (non-spatial) data sources
GeoPortal4everybody concept The GeoPortal4Everybody contains these parts: A uthorization, Simple Content Management System – Simple CMS , C atalogue client, V isualization client, Geohosting : MapMan tool DataMan tool M etadata editor MICKA , Metadata Extractor tool .
SimpleCMS for content management is focused on usability and simplicity for end users enables simple approach for solving complex tasks t he main target on the code side is the clarity and security of the implementation allows exploiting the potential coming from the social networks
SimpleCMS for content management SimpleCMS allows for example the following functions (regarding the home page): to define the content and menu, to publish articles , to publish external links in menu, to publish predefined map composition from MapMan tool, to order / remove information, to publish RSS channels.
SimpleCMS for content management Editing of article using SimpleCMS
SimpleCMS for content management Working with map using SimpleCMS
GeoPortal4everybody & Metadata Using of MICKA tool for searching of metadata records
GeoPortal4everybody & Metadata Metadata Extractor tool enabling: to extract available metadata directly from different files to edit metadata to publish metadata Other possibility is : to extract and e dit metadata directly from existing URL addresses to store metadata on geo portal.
GeoPortal 4 everybody & vocational education BizBiz tool: web browser based e-conference collaboration and learning tool integrated into GeoPortal4everybody solution focuses on providing a learning platform for spatial planning and GIS but can be used also in other applications The training process can be realized as: online video lecture, recorded lecture Every lecture’s life cycle consists of several stages: upcoming lecture – when a lecture has been created by lecturer and published in BizBiz lecture list, live lecture – when a lecture is online (without / with feedback) archived lecture – after end of online lecture.
GeoPortal 4 everybody & vocational education Environment of the BizBiz „class“ with links to the social networks
4 th way in practice The Ministry of the Environment of the Czech Republic Zemgale Region in Latvia European projects PLAN4ALL ENVIROGRID SDI-EDU for regional and urban planning NATURNET …
Conclusions The proposed 4 th way of building of spatial data infrastructure uses outcomes from standardization process like INSPIRE or OGC and combines it with both commercial and voluntary initiatives  GeoPortal 4 everybody The basic idea is to support integration of spatial and non spatial information and also use social networking principles to spread an awareness about how to build spatial data infrastructure in terms of INSPIRE The modern educational platform for spatial planners has been built upon the GeoPortal4everybody principles  http://portal.sdi-edu.zcu.cz
