INTRODUCTION
Mathematics club plays an important role in motivating the
students to learn mathematics with interest and involvement. Sometime mathematics
teaching in classroom become so monotonous that the student restless and get easily
distracted. Mathematics Club provides excellent opportunities for students to break away
from the monotony of a rigid and structured classroom environment. Though the learning
that takes place in a mathematics club is informal in nature, it is mean full as the stress is
on practical application, in mathematics club the student chooses the activities on his
own, and purses them in free and relaxed manners contrary to the atmosphere prevailing
in a classroom. Club provides a lot of freedom of expression for the student and it
supplement classroom learning.
FUNCTIONS OF THE MATHEMATICS CLUB
The functions of the mathematics Club can be summarised as under;
 Mathematics Club helps in the proper utilisation of leisure time.
 If helps in arousing and maintaining student’s interest in mathematics.
 It provides the students with opportunities to develop their explorative, creative
and incentive faculties.
 It inculcates the habit of self-study and independent work among the student.
 It offers an ideal avenue for a free exchange of mathematical ideas and for from
and helpful criticism of these ideas.
 It provides an informal and a social atmosphere which the classroom can hardly
provide.
 It offers excellent opportunities for free consideration of matters of special interest
to the members without the necessity of following any particular sequence as a
required in a classroom
 IT helps in developing heuristics and problem solving attitude among the student.
 It provides opportunities for student to translate the theory into practise and to
apply their learning in daily life situations.
 It helps the student to imbibe social qualities like co-operation, tolerance,
adjustment and open-mindedness as they work in groups.
 It helps to meet individual needs of the students as every member gets
opportunities to work in his areas an interest.
 It offers a good platform for students to listen to renowned mathematician,
eminent mathematics teachers and educationalist and to acquaint themselves with
the latest developments in mathematics.
 The informal knowledge acquired through mathematics club activities supplements
classroom learning.
 Mathematics Club extend learning beyond the limits of the classroom. Though
clubs may meet during school hours, their activities may often extend top out of
school hours at home, in the laboratory, in the field etc.
 Club activities provide first homed experiences to the learners as they participate in
model making, arranging for exhibition, field work and laboratory work and so on.
ORGANISATION OF MATHEMATICS CLUB
A properly organised mathematics Club goes a long way in
stimulating interest among the students in mathematics. It is desirable that the
initiative for theorganisation of such a club should come from students. Itshould be
run the student under the supervision and guidance of the mathematics teacher. The
objectives of the club should be clearly stated and understood by all the members.
Emphasis should be on active participation of the members. A draft the constitution of
the club can be prepared by the mathematics club. This draft contusion provides
information on name of the club, aims and objectives of the membership details and
membership fees, purposes for which the expenditure can be incurred, the competent
authority to sanction the fund, the various offices available and the procedure for
filling up such offices, etc.
The following office-bears are essential for the successful working of the mathematics
club.
PATRON
The mathematics Club should have the head of the institution as its patron.
SPONSOR
One of the senior mathematics teachers can be sponsor of the mathematics Club.
MEMBERS
All the mathematics students of the school can be members of the club. Those students
who are interested in mathematics can be the associated members. However, the
membership of the club should be, as far as possible, fairly homogenous as regards age
and grade level in orders that programmes that may be of interest to all the members can
be arranged.
EXECUTIVE COMMITTIEE
An executive committee should be formed including the following members elected or
nominates from the students.
 Chairman
 Secretary
 Assistant Secretary
 Treasurer
 One or two class representative from each class
DUTIES OF THE OFFICE –BEARERS
For the efficient and successful working of the mathematics Club. It is advisable to
demarcate the duties of each office-bear
PATRON
The patron of the club had taken a keen interest in all the activities of the club. He or she
is responsible for providing all possible facilities to the club.
SPONSOR
The sponsor taken initiative to start the mathematics club and motivates the students to
plan and carry out a number of activities. His role is that of a guide, an advisor, a
supervisor and a facilitator.
CHAIRMAN OF THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTIEE
The chairman has to convene and preside over executive meeting.
MEMBERS OF THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTIEE
Members of the executive committee have to extend their full co-operation in planning
and carrying out the programmes of the mathematics club.
SECRETARY
The secretary calls for executive committee meeting in consultation with the chairman
and in accordance with the provisions of the constitution. He is required to maintain a
proper record of the various activities of the club and the minutes of the executive
committee meetings.
ASSISTANT SECRETARY
The assistant secretary’s role is to assist the secretary in his duties and in the
absence of the secretary perform the role of the secretary
TREASURER
The treasurer is responsible for collecting membership fees maintain the
correct account of the income and expenditure
SUGGESTED ACTIVITIES FOR A
MATHEMATICS CLUB
The programme of mathematics clubs may covers a wide range of topics. The topics may
include history of mathematics, biographical sketches, evolution and development of
certain aspects of present day mathematics, some selected topics from any branches of
mathematics, games and contests and application of mathematics to other subjects and
field of activity. The nature of the programme and topics will depend upon the age and
advancement of the members of the club, the sources and facilities available and
advantages drawn from such programmes. It desirable to plan the programmes. It is
desirable to plan the programmes for the whole session
Some of the activates that can be of the following types:-
 Organising mathematical exhibition or fairs.
 Organising lechers on important topics of mathematics by eminent scholars and
teachers.
 Celebrating historical days and event of mathematical significance. {example:
birthdays of eminent mathematician}
 Organising inter-school contests and quiz competitions on topics of
mathematical interest.
 Helping in the establishment and maintenance of mathematical laboratory.
 Preparing chart, model and improvised apparatus for the mathematics
laboratory and mathematics classroom.
 Helping in the establishment and maintenanceof mathematical library.
 Arranging for watching appropriate UGC programmes in mathematics telecast
by Doordashan.
 Organising seminar or lechers on history of mathematics, Biographies of
eminent Indian mathematicians, evolution of certain mathematical concept,
utilitarian values of mathematicsand some selected topics from arithmetic,
algebra, geometryand trigonometry and so on.
 Conducting useful individual or group projects in mathematics.
 Organising field work and field trips to places of mathematical interest.
 Writing articles related to mathematics for the school magazine or newsletter.
 Organising recreational activities in mathematics such a puzzle, riddles, catch
problems, mathematical fallacies, number games and so on.
 Publication of newsletter and bulletin of the club.
 Preparing exhibits of mathematical interest for the bulletin board, mathematics
library and mathematics laboratory.
CONCLUSION
Thus a mathematics Club gets the students acquainted with a wide of range of
topics related to mathematics. The success of a mathematics Club depends
upon the enthusiasm shown by the teacher as well as the involvement of the
students in the activities and programmers organised by the club.
