English is widely used around the world, with over 400 million native speakers and hundreds of millions more who speak it as a second language. It has official status in over 70 countries. While over 5,000 languages are spoken globally, English and Mandarin Chinese are the most widely spoken, with around 1.5 billion people able to speak English. English originated in England but spread internationally through the British Empire and American economic and military power, making it a global lingua franca despite other proposed international languages.
