Steps
1) Locate systems disk.
» Must be for the system being repaired.
2) Insert systems media and boot.
» F8 to set boot order.
» Adjust BIOS.
3) Select the repair option.
» Windows XP enters Recovery Console (RC).
» Windows Vista (and newer) enters Recovery Environment (RE).
4) Fix the problem.
» Power down.
» Remove media.
» Power up.

Windows XP’s Recovery
Console can be used to help
recover a crashed system.
There are different modifier options to choose from.
To get a list of available commands, type “/?” at the
command prompt.

Windows Vista (and newer)
Recovery Environment can
be used to help recover a
system that has problems.
Several modifier options are available. Once at the
command prompt, typing “/?” will display a list of
commands that can be used.

– Windows XP Recovery Console (RC).
» fixboot: writes a new boot partition record to the
designated hard drive; this will fix most booting issues.
» fixmbr: writes a new master boot record to the hard drive;
use with caution as this can damage partition tables.
– RC and RE command line utilities.
» bootrec: command stands for “boot reconstruction” and
must be used before fixboot and fixmbr become
available.
» fixboot: writes a new boot partition record to the
designated hard drive; this will fix most booting issues.
» fixmbr: writes a new master boot record to the hard drive;
use with caution as this can damage partition tables.

Boot to systems media and enter either Recovery Console or Recovery
Environment. Power down and reboot after fixing the problem.

Summary
Both Recovery Console and Recovery Environment have fixboot and fixmbr
available. Recovery Environment requires that the bootrec utility is run
before using either command. Caution is advised when using fixmbr.
