An initial assessment is used to determine a learner's current level in English and math, assess their suitability for a program, and inform their individual learning plan. Current assessments tend to be brief multiple choice tests that do not adequately measure writing skills or functional abilities. A diagnostic assessment is more thorough, identifying what skills a learner has and what needs development across the full curriculum. Moving forward, assessments should present students with real-world tasks requiring problem solving, data display, formal writing, and discussion.
