What is an initial assessment?
• Is an integral part of the IAG process
• An initial assessment gives a clear indication of a
learner’s current English and maths level
• Initial assessment is used to ascertain the
student’s suitability for the programme and
readiness to learn
Paper based initial assessment
Task 1
Look at the initial assessments on your table and
discuss the content of each.
Use the grid to write down your findings from the three
assessments. Form a discussion when you have collected
all the data.
Current assessments being used
Initial assessments are generally multiple choice
Assessments tend to be brief and not robust enough
Are skills based and not ‘functional’
Do not test writing skill
The importance of a diagnostic assessment
• Is a thorough assessment of skills across all
aspects of the curriculum
• A diagnostic assessment will highlight the skills a
learner is competent with and will tell you what
skills need to be developed.
• A diagnostic assessment helps to inform the ILP
(Individual Learning Plan) and is specific to each
individual
Moving forward with functional skills
Students are faced with a number of tasks to problem
solve
Expected to show their working out to maths tasks
Draw graphs and charts to display data
Write formal letters, emails or newsletters
Take part in discussion and presentation

Free writing exercise
Dan has completed a free writing piece as part of his
assessment. Use the functional skills standards to map
across what he has written.
The importance of a good assessment
Gives you quality information about the ability of the
student at the start of the programme
Tests a wide variety of English and maths skills
Is functional requiring learners to interpret a task and
to use a range of skills to problem solve
