El Sistema is a Venezuelan music education program that aims to promote social development through music. It emphasizes intensive ensemble participation from an early age to foster community and keep learning fun. Young students can join local centers called nucleos to learn instruments and participate in orchestras. El Sistema has also established partnerships internationally to share its philosophy and resources. It has grown to involve over 150 youth orchestras in Venezuela through a network of nucleos.

Citizen Role El Sistema’s approach to music education emphasizes intensive ensemble participation from the earliest stages, group learning, peer teaching and a commitment to keeping the joy and fun of musical learning and music making ever-present. The backbone of El Sistema student training is preparation for participation in orchestral ensembles, which are at the soul of the Núcleo community and culture. Degrees of Involvement Young students who have a will to learn music instruments can involve the organization. They will join a program that teaches a specific instrument. Instructors of El Sistema are music professionals who currently play a certain instrument and mostly they are the former student of the organization. Public Role In 2009, El Ssistema in partnership with the New England Conservatory of Music, the TED Prize, TED, and the Quincy Jones MusiQ Consortium, among others, established El Sistema USA, a support and advocacy network that will grow to provide comprehensive information on El Sistema philosophy and methodology, and host a variety of resources that will aid those building, expanding and supporting El Sistema programs throughout the world. Public & Collaborative Services: Case Study Enabling Systems Many begin attending their local El Sistema center, called a “nucleo” where the miracle musical interaction sparks and the key of success for El Sistema, as early as age 2 or 3, with the vast majority continuing well into their teens; attending up to six days a week, three to four hours a day, plus retreats and intensive workshops. Background / History The Simón Bolívar Music Foundation(SBMF) was established on February 20, 1979 with the purpose of preparing highly qualified musicians and obtaining the finance required to execute its plans, activities and programs. SBMF was founded in 1996 in order to promote and develop the youth and children’s orchestras formed or that may be formed by El Sistema across the country; as well as to implement activities and programs aiming at the education and training of the orchestra’s members. SBMF is attached to the Vice Presidency of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, for bringing individual benefits to youngsters and having a positive impact on the family, the community and therefore, on the society. - 3. Public & Collaborative Services: Case Study symphony orchestras, the choral and chambers’ groups born in the bosom of El Sistema, as well as the academic and operational centers. From a functional, educational, artistic and administrative point of view, El Sistema is made up of Núcleos operating in many cities and towns of Venezuela, thus integrating a complex and systematic network encompassing more than 150 youth orchestras and 70 children’s orchestras. In the last two decades, the local professional symphony orchestras emerged from El Sistema have become independent state-funded organizations which have joined together in the Federación de Orquestas Sinfónicas Regionales de Venezuela (Federation of Regional Symphony Orchestras of Venezuela).
