• #15: C-V2X will define two transmission modes that work together to enable a broad range of automotive use cases: Direct communications – Enhancing LTE Direct device-to-device communications, by utilizing what is called the PC5 Interfacet o enable exchange of real-time information between vehicles traveling at fast speeds, in high-density traffic, and even out of mobile network coverage. Supports a mechanism where cars can broadcast messages (e.g., their location, speed) to other cars directly at 100s of meters range at 100msec duty cycle. The PC5 interface was first introduced in Release 12 3GPP when a D2D Discovery and communications system was first defined. Now in R14 we are enhancing this interface to deal with high Doppler, improve synchronization, latency etc. Works both in and out of network coverage. Suitable for V2V safety and other latency sensitive use cases Network communications - Leveraging existing infrastructure and ubiquitous coverage of existing LTE networks (optimized LTE Broadcast and unicast) to bring additional services, such as, finding open parking space or alerting to an accident a few miles ahead. It utilizes the cellular network and the Uu Interface which is the interface you normally use to access the cellular network. In this mode the network can communicate with the cars using the cellular broadcast system (called eMBMS), while vehicles can communicate with the network via unicast over the regular WAN connection and the Uu interface. Suitable for more latency tolerant use cases
• #22: The purpose of Cellular-V2X is to provide a meaningful alternative to 802.11p (aka DSRC) which is a technology that was developed 15 years ago. C-V2X aims to provide a modern alternative with superior performance and a clear evolution path which can benefit from the introduction of 5G technologies and the cellular ecosystem as a whole. C-V2X builds on top of LTE Direct D2D Communications by: Enhancing the physical layer to address the latency-critical, reliable V2X communications use case Reusing all the upper layers that have been defined for over a decade now in ISO, ETSI and IEEE 1609 family of specifications. A very rich set of applications and services has been defined by the automotive industry for example by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), while extensive specifications in the area of transport layers as well as security has been worked on by many regional bodies like ISO, ETSI and IEEE.
• #25: The path to 5G will deliver this evolution starting with C-V2X technology as part of 3GPP release 14 specifications. The direct communication component of V2X is expected to be completed by the end of this year and overall spec completion expected mid-2017 C-V2X will provide a unified connectivity platform for safer “vehicles of tomorrow.”, providing the following benefits: Enhancements of LTE Direct for V2X communication, bringing improvements over 802.11p – up to a few additional seconds of alert time and twice the range of DSRC. Leveraging existing LTE networks for V2X communications, using the existing infrastructure and ubiquitous coverage of LTE networks (including LTE Broadcast and unicast) to offer additional applications and services (e.g. alert drivers to an accident a few miles ahead or guide here to an open parking space). Using existing infrastructure allows more cost effective deployment of network communication (no need for dedicated roadside units) Building upon existing LTE services for automotive, such as telematics and infotainment. A rich roadmap to 5G with strong ecosystem, evolving the technology to accommodate ever-expanding safety requirements and use cases Beyond safety, Cellular V2X also enables a broad range of use cases from better situational awareness to enhanced traffic management and connected cloud services.
