Learning activities for self-appraisal
and self-regulation.

Introduction
According to author Christine Goh, the
present strategy approach is now familiar to
many teachers. The aim of this presentation is
to provide useful information to help learners
develop the ability to facilitate and improve
their own listening development.
Theoretical Principles
• Metacognitive instruction:
a. Learning is an active and constructive process
b. It follows developmental trajectories in subject-
matter domain
c. It is guided by learners´introspective awareness
and control of their mental processes
d. It is facilitated by social, collaborative settings
valueing self-directed student dialogue

Integrated experiential listening tasks
1. Metacognitive listening sequence
2. Self-directed listening
3. Listening buddies
4. Peer-designed listening tasks
5. Post-listening perception activities

Guided reflections on listening
1. Listening diaries
2. Anxiety and motivation charts
3. Process-based discussions
4. Self-report checklists
Principled Design of Metacognitive
Instructional Materials
Purposes:
• To provide different kinds of scaffolding.
• To apply a cognitive framework to ensure
that materials and activities are designed
systematically in a principled manner.
