Mohandas Gandhi was born in 1869 in India and went on to lead the Indian independence movement against British rule through nonviolent civil disobedience. As a young man, he faced discrimination in South Africa which shaped his political views. He helped unite Indians in South Africa and promoted tolerance. After returning to India, he led large nonviolent protests against unfair British policies. Ultimately, his leadership and strategy of nonviolence and civil disobedience led to India gaining independence, though he was assassinated by a Hindu nationalist in 1948.
