Why Discussion ?
• Discussion activities can be text or voice based and is
generally used to support asynchronous learning.
• Asynchronous learning involves the ability for trainers
and learners to maintain communication without having
to meet at the same place at the same time.
Why Discussion ?
• Discussion activities can be undertaken using a variety of
methods:
– Discussion forums (e.g. Moodle, other LMS)
– Voice boards (e.g. VoiceThread, iPadio, Voxopop)
– Instant Messaging (e.g. Skype, MSN, Google, Facebook)
– Comments posted to wikis or blogs
– Closed Social Networking Sites (e.g. Ning, Elgg, Custom)
– Open Social Network Sites (Facebook)
– MicroBlogging (Twitter, SMS, MMS )
Why Discussion ?
• Extend activities from F2F sessions
• Shape form of F2F workshops
• Knowledge check – are you “getting it?”
• Pre workshop activities
• Ongoing professional community of learners
• Problem Solving
• Consultation around work practices/policy
• Information sharing
• Repository of corporate wisdom and experience, tips
and tricks
Facilitated Activity- Discussion
This might be:
• Discussion
• Debate
• Brainstorm
• Small group activities
• Problem Solving
• Knowledge Transfer
• Research
• The tools you can use there include Threads,
Attachments, Email Subscription
What we
used to think
Moderated Activity- Discussion
Moderating a discussion in an online environment is called e-
moderation.
The role of the trainer as an e-moderator is to:
•provide the rules of the discussion
•offer an opening gambit, the provocative statement, scene
setting
•rephrase what learners have said to ensure their point is
clearly stated, if necessary
•provide links from one aspect of the discussion to the other
•draw together the disparate threads of the discussion to form
a conclusion.
•Encourage, over time, learners/participants to take
moderation responsibility around new topics and a fresh voice
Virtual Facilitator (Moderator) –
• " Facilitators stimulate learner participation
and interaction by using small group
discussions, collaborative projects, case
studies....”
Where we
seem to be
going
Virtual Facilitator (Moderator) –
• Share one idea here that describes how you
think your trainers could link learner
participation and interaction around a group
learning activity that can also act as an
assessment task.....
• Take a minute or two and add
to the chat box
Virtual Facilitator (Moderator) –
• What might be the consequences of this type
of activity for the sort of course content you
might need to provide your students?
Virtual Facilitator (Moderator) –
• Consider some activities using discussions that
you can attempt to extend the value of online
training after the initial learning experience, to
build an ongoing community of learners
• Take the Microphone!!
Virtual Facilitator (Moderator)
• Brainstorm some of the management issues
you can foresee in using Discussions to
promote ongoing training and learning with
your target group
– Management
– Topics
– Responsibility
– Participation
Virtual Facilitator – Job Des
• Lets make a group list that will build into a job
description for a Virtual Facilitator.
• Whiteboard!!
Virtual Facilitator – Job Des
• What extra tasks will you need to do now your
training is in some way online?
• Take a minute in the text box!!
Next session Tuesday 2nd November 2010
Thank you for playing
