Seven Effective Techniques

for
Presenting Grammar
Each technique has advantages but
some possible problems may relate to it
too.

Think of that All

And
. Share what you think with me
1- Using Realia
• Put some objects in front of students( book,
pen, pencil, ……. etc )
• Ask students to close their eyes and move one
or some of the objects.
• Ask students: What have I moved? Eliciting:
You have moved ……….
• Ask a student to do the same asking: What has
he moved? Eliciting: He has moved ……….
• Write the examples on the board.
Using pictures- 2
• Show students two pictures asking them to
make sentences to show the difference
between the 2 pictures.
• Eliciting: In picture 2, Ahmed has closed the
door. In picture 2, Noha has ironed the dress.
• Correct the mistakes and write the sentences
on the board asking students to repeat them.
• Refer to the form and explain the meaning.
Making a situation- 3
• Talk about 4 or 5 persons students know well
using the tense ( e.g. Ali has just written a word
on the board, Ahmed has just closed the window,
…………. )
• Write the sentences on the board underlining the
word just and the form of the tense stressing on
it when reading the sentences.
• Present the meaning of just.
• Ask students to talk about people they know
giving similar examples.
Using a song text- 4
• Find a song text that contains a lot of the
tense.
• Design and distribute a worksheet asking
students to listen to the song and fill in the
gaps on the worksheet.
• Gradually elicit the use and form of the tense.
Using Reading- 5
• Use a report or a passage that focuses on the tense.
• Write questions below the passage focusing on the
tense.
• Students read and answer the questions which should
be constructed as: What have the boys seen/received/
sent ……..?
• Elicit the answers orally asking for complete sentences.
• Write the answers on the board: The boys have
seen/sent/ ………
• Refer to the form and meaning using colours and
underlining.
Using a timeline- 6
• Draw a timeline on the board such as the
following:
| ……………………………………..………|
Past------------------------------------ Now--------------------------------------future

• Write a sentence in the tense placed between past
and now ( in the dotted line, e.g. I have seen him )
• Tell students first about the use of the tense then
the form.
• Ask them to give more sentences similar to the
example.
Explaining directly- 7
• Write the form of the tense on the board:
have or has + past participle
• Tell students when use the tense.
• Tell them the common words used in this
tense.
• Give examples to illustrate.
• Elicit more examples from them.
