INTRODUCTION
“ABSTRACT”
The Batteries form a significant part of many electronic devices. Typical electrochemical
batteries or cells convert chemical energy into electrical energy. Batteries based on the charging
ability are classified into primary and secondary cells. Secondary cells are widely used because
of their rechargeable nature. The paper batteries could meet the energy demands of the next
generation gadgets. Presently battery takes up a huge amount of space and contributes to a large
part of device’s weight. There is a strong device’s weight. There is strong recent interest in
ultrathin, flexible, safe energy storage devices to meet the various designs and power needs of
modern gadgets
PAPER BATTERY
2
 A paper battery is a flexible, ultra-thin energy storage and production device formed by
combining carbon nanotubes with a conventional sheet of cellulose-based paper.
 The Nano materials are a one-dimensional structure with very small diameters.
 It can be bent and twisted, trimmed with scissors or molded into any needed shape.
 A paper battery acts as both a high-energy battery and super capacitor.
 A paper battery is a flexible, ultra-thin energy storage and production device formed by
combining carbon nanotubes with a conventional sheet of cellulose-based paper.
 A paper battery acts as both a high-energy battery and super capacitor, combining two
components that are separate in traditional electronics.
 PRINCIPLE
 Electricity is the flow of electrical power or electrons.
 Batteries produce electrons through a chemical reaction between electrolyte and metal in
the traditional battery.
 Chemical reaction in the paper battery is between electrolyte and carbon nanotubes.
3
 Electrons collect on the negative terminal of the battery and flow along a connected wire
to the positive terminal.
 Electrons must flow from the negative to the positive terminal for the chemical reaction
to continue.
CARBON NANOTUBES
 Carbon nanotubes are the main concept behind paper battery.
 Carbon nanotubes (CNTs; also known as buckytubes) are allotropes of carbon with a
cylindrical nanostructure.
 CNTs exhibit extraodinary strength and unique electrical properties, and are efficient
thermal conductors.
 Carbon nanotube is an allotrope of carbon.
 Allotropy is nothing but different structural modifications of an element.
FABRICATION
The materials required for the preparation of paper battery are:
Copier paper and Carbon nano ink
Graphene Structure Rolled at angle CarbonNanotube
4
 Carbon nano ink which is black in colour is a solution of nano rods, surface adhesive
agent and ionic salt solutions. Carbon nano ink is spread on one side of the paper.
 The paper is kept in the oven at 150 degree Celsius. This evaporates the water content on
the paper.
 The battery is ready and would provide a terminal voltage enough to power an LED.
ADVANTAGES
 Used as both battery and capacitor.
 It is flexible.
 It is ultra thin energy storage device.
 Long lasting.
 Non toxic.
 Steady power production.
 High efficiency.
 Available in different sizes.
 It is light weight.
 it is more economical.
 Can be easily disposed.
 Can be recharged.
LIMITATIONS
 Presently, the devices are only a few inches across and they have to be scaled up to sheets
of newspaper size to make it commercially viable.
5
 Carbon nanotubes are expensive.
 The idea is still in the labs and a commercially viable paper battery will take at least 40-
60 years to become a reality.
 Researches in nanotechnology to mass produce nanotubes are promising.
APPLICATIONS
 Low battery power devices like in calculators, wrist watch and other low drain devices.
 Laptop batteries, mobile phones, handheld digital cameras.
 Wireless communication devices like mouses, keyboard, bluetooth headphones, etc.
CONCLUSIONS
 The range of possible applications for paper batteries derives from their important
advantages as compared to conventional battery technologies.
 They can be made in virtually any shape and size to meet the requirements of each
application.
 The batteries are rechargeable, and have reduced cost and weight which in itself may give
birth to new applications.
 Paper battery could solve all the problems associated with electrical energy storage.
 However the reality is still very far away, though the researches are promising.
