Asynchronous Task # 2
Answer the questions in 1 whole yellow paper.
Give the meaning and definition of the following;
1.What is visual art?
2.What are the types of visual art?
3.How to read and understand visual art?
Types Of Visual Art
There are three basic types of
Visual Art. Subcategories exist in each of
these types. Often, these types are
misrepresented or more often,
misunderstood. Whether the work is
three dimensional sculptures or two
dimensional, it will still fall under one of
these three main types. These types are
representational, abstract, or non-
objective.
Types Of Visual Art
Contemporary visual artist like
to combine mediums and materials
to express an idea or simply to
reinvent things and divert them from
their natural form. The different mix
and combinations of media and
creative variations of design,
composition, color, and texture can
all be used for interesting effect.
Types Of Visual Art
• Representational Art shows
actual objects or subjects
from nature or reality. They
may look exactly like the
objects copied naturally or
realistically or can be stylized
for as long as the essential
parts are present in the
artwork.
Types Of Visual Art
• Abstract Art takes subjects from
reality and nature but the artists
present them in ways different
from the way they are seen in
everyday life. The artists use
elements of art, such as lines,
colors, shapes, textures, etc., and
organize them observing some or
combination of the principles of
design.
Types Of Visual Art
• Non-Objective Art also uses the
elements of art and principles of
design but the artworks do not
represent or depict a person,
place, or thing in the natural
world. Usually, the content of
the work is its colors, shapes,
brushstrokes, size, scale, and in
some cases, the process by
which it is made.
Techniques in Mixed Media Art
• Collage – is made by adhering
flat elements such as
newspaper or magazine cut-
outs, printed text, illustrations,
photographs, cloth, string, etc.
to a flat surface to create a
thick layer that is almost like a
relief sculpture.
Techniques in Mixed Media Art
• Decalcomania – is the
process of applying gouache
to paper or glass then
transferring a reversal of that
image onto canvas or other
flat materials.
Reading Visual Art - Lesson 1 (Types of Visual Art)
Techniques in Mixed Media Art
• Decoupage – is done by
adhering cut-outs of paper
and then coating these with
one or more coats or
transparent coating of
varnish.
Techniques in Mixed Media Art
• Frottage – is the technique of
rubbing with crayon on a piece
of paper which has been placed
over an object or an image. The
impression of the image can be
created using leaves, wood,
wire screen, or metal with
embossed image or words.
Techniques in Mixed Media Art
• Montage – is used for
photography or film where a
pictorial image is juxtaposed
or placed overlapping to
make another picture design.
Techniques in Mixed Media Art
• Assemblage – as the word
implies, it is putting together
objects and combining them
in new context. Assemblage
employ any method of
joining or fastening to make a
three-dimension object.
How to Read
and Understand
Visual Art?
How to Read and Understand Visual Art?
When you look at
a painting or sculpture,
do you wonder what it
means? How does it
make you feel?
How to Read and Understand Visual Art?
• Theme- relates to the
meaning of painting, rather
than the subject, which is
specific and basic. Usually
about life, society or human
nature, but can be any other
subject. Themes are the
fundamental and often
universal ideas explored in a
work.
How to Read and Understand Visual Art?
• Mood- Is the
atmosphere in the
artwork or the feeling
expressed. Is the art
tranquil, or is it dark or
disturbing
How to Read and Understand Visual Art?
• Tone- refers to the
lightness or darkness of
colors used, which can
help to create a sense of
depth or distance in art.
Artists use light and dark
colors to convey a mood
or an emotion.
How to Read and Understand Visual Art?
Color can harmonize, or
bring elements together
and create a pleasing
sensation, or it may clash.
Finally, the composition,
or the underlying structure
of the art, refers to where
the artist placed the
subject matter.
The Nightmare By: Henri Fusile
The woman is draped in white,
lying on the bed. She’s asleep and her
limp arms sprawl to the ground. A
creepy-looking glowering creature
seats on her chest. Above her, a
ghostly horse head peers from
behind a curtain in the left section of
the canvas. Except for the woman,
rendered in white and other bright
colors, everything else is depicted in
deep red, dark brown, and black.
The Nightmare By: Henri Fusile
We can’t see the background,
its obscured in darkness, and we’re
not sure where the creature or the
horse came from. The paintings
tone, created by the contrast
between dark and light, is
mysterious and unsettling. We
might not know what’s going on,
but we know its not good.
The Nightmare By: Henri Fuseli
The creature, shown in brown
and grays appears to rest heavily on
woman’s chest, a feeling we
sometimes have when we suffer
through bad dreams. So the tone is
overwhelmingly dark, the mood is
scary, and theme reflects fears and
nightmares.
Group Activity
With your group, read and understand
the given picture by applying the basic
technique in reading and understating
visual art.

Asynchronous Task # 3
Among all the techniques in mixed media art we
discussed such as collage, decalcomania, decoupage,
frottage, montage, and assemblage. Choose and create one
artwork you want to work as your own masterpiece and
place it in 1/8 illustration board (portrait orientation)
following the border/plate I shared with you. Submission
will be on October 12, 2024.
