Step-by-step
I used shapes to create the border for my school magazine and I filled it in with the colour
purple, using the text tool to create the slogan ‘all highlight and sports coverage, the date
and the issue number and the price, I then inserted pictures of the Facebook, Twitter , St
Pauls logo and logo , then I used shapes again to create cubes with a deeper depth and
added the side stories in there, I then inserted my picture of the magazine star.

I used the shapes to do a rectangle at the top of the page and then I used text to write
the heading which was contents page and the page numbers and stories, I then inserted
a picture of myself and used text tool to write the editorial and the links to the social
media.

involvethemagazine’seditorialteamassemblinganddecidingwhattopicswillbecoveredinthe
nextissueof themagazinefromimagesto coverstories.

withoutcontentyousimplycannothavethemagazineinthefirstplace,thefirststepisthrough
in-housestaffwritersandthesecondwayis throughexternalwritersthatarecommissionedto

Established Magazine for my Research
Masthead: The masthead is the main
heading and name of the magazine.
This is generally located above the
cover star and act as a banner and as
you can see vibe follows that
structure.
Cover lines: are generally seen as
secondary stories that feature in the
magazine however do not have the
importance that the main headline
possess.
Cover star : displays the celebrity
starring in the main heading and is
generally located in front of the
masthead to denote his or her “star
appeal”
Target Audience – Katz, Maslow, Hartley and/or socio-economic needs
The target audience for Vibe magazine is for people around the age of 28 and
they are predominantly male because 62% of people who buy the magazine
are male, they are well educated with majority in employment with 73.9%
they are predominately African-Americans with 71.3%, the readers of this
magazine are into the latest technology, they also enjoy reading about music
films, celebrities technology and fashion and they are dedicated music fans.
What is the USP of this magazine? YOU MUST refer to specific
conventions/stories from you research
From the research completed into this media product, I think the USP that vibe
magazine have is the star featuring on the front cover as it clearly displays who
will feature in the magazine and will attract audience due to the fact that the
music is currently at its peak and many people across the country identify specific
figures with good music and by displaying this artist people will automatically feel
that good music features in the magazine.
Publisher research
Vibe magazine is currently owned by intermedia partners which is a private
equity, they own other companies such as WAPA-TV(radio stations) but they
have earned their success through media intuitions, they distribute their
magazine through their online website which provides some articles from the
magazine, also the magazines get distributed to a variety of shops ranging from
comer shops to supermarkets, they make catchy offers in order to tempt the
audience to buy it.
Conventions of a Music Magazine
The logo of the magazine SHOULD be placed on this slide neatly somewhere
Masthead : is almost like the banner and it
represents the company many other
magazines have the artist covering the
masthead but XXL put it on the corner of
there magazine.
Cover lines: XXL have a different layout
instead of cover lines being placed
everywhere they put it on the left side of
the magazine and all the things that are
less important on the right.
Cover star: The cover star is the main
image and is usually posted in the centre
but as you can see XXL vary on how they
portray their superstars.
Target Audience – Katz, Maslow, Hartley and/or socio-economic needs
XXL mission is to take a mature real and intelligent approach to hip hop music. XXL
keeps up with hip hops energy and targets the people that live for urban music.
The general target audience for XXL magazine is 78% male readers, with the
median age of 27, and 44.7% college buyers, and 67% African Americans. Priced
at $5.99 XXL is the number 1 selling magazine on the newsstand which outsells
magazines like Rolling Stone, Vibe, and SPIN.
What is the USP of this magazine? YOU MUST refer to specific

From the research completed into this media product, I think the USP of XXL
is that they focus on exclusives with international and well respected artist on
the front cover and the other unique selling point is that they are one of the
longest running hip hop magazines so they are well established
