Work programme for 2017-18
 Five working groups assigned to each pillar addressing global and regional
implementation plans from the perspective of the ITPS;
 Four working groups to prepare reports on the progress made in addressing the
four priorities identified in the SWSR report; also WG1 and WG2 to support the
SPI-UNCCD; WG2 and WG4 to participate in the follow-up of the joint ITPS-IPCC-
SPI-UNCCD GSOC symposium;
 Complete the new Global Soil Organic Carbon Map (GSOCMap) by 2017;
• A specific request for the ITPS to focus on soil erosion as a priority topic was
supported by the PA.
• The PA recommended that the ITPS explore the possibility of elaborating a study
on the economic benefits of SSM for farmers and other land users, as well as
identify best practices that prevent soil degradation. This study could be
released by 2020-21, before the second SWSR in 2025.
 Organize, together with other relevant UN panels and organizations, a Global
Symposium on Soil Pollution to be held in March 2018
Interface with other pertinent
bodies and initiatives
 IPCC
 Formally recognized as observer organization within IPCC plenary
 Global Soil Organic Carbon Symposium 2017
 IPBES
 Land Degradation and Restoration Assessment
 UNCCD-SPI
 Global Soil Organic Carbon map (SDG 15.3 Sub-Indicator)
 Global Soil Erosion Assessment
 4pour1000
 Participation as observer in the 4pour1000 Committee for Science and
Technology meetings

LDN ADOPTED AT UNCCD COP.13
Target 15.3 By 2030, combat desertification,
restore degraded land and soil, including land
affected by desertification, drought and floods,
and strive to achieve a land-degradation-
neutral world
The United Nations Convention to Combat
Desertification (UNCCD) defines land degradation
neutrality (LDN) as “a state whereby the amount
and quality of land resources necessary to support
ecosystem functions and services and enhance food
security remain stable or increase within specified
temporal and spatial scales and ecosystems”.
Follow-up of COP 13 decision
• The SPI will cooperate with the ITPS on topics to
be jointly agreed by the SPI and the ITPS, bearing
in mind the importance of soil organic carbon to
land degradation neutrality (LDN).
• The SPI should be involved in any follow-up
activities emerging from the conclusions of the
Global Symposium on Soil Organic Carbon,
including the organization of a possible second
meeting in cooperation with IPCC and other
organizations.
Modification of the
Rules of Procedure
 Prolongation of term of office of ITPS
members from two to three years
Other pending issues suggested by the ITPS
members:
ITPS Plenary sessions to be organized on a
regular rotation in the Regional Soil
Partnerships
