Important Terms
 NEIF – Network Fuer Innovation Forchung
 HPZ – High performance zones
 BS – Border Switch
 BR – Border Router
 CR – Campus Router
 BSC – BS Controller
2
What is BelWue?
 ISP in Germany for higher education and research org in Germany
 Providing interconnection between universities and NEIF (Network for
Innovation and Research)
 Connecting 45 institutes consists of 150 network locations
 Working on integration of high performance zones go interconnect
universities using Openflow and BGP
 Trend of centralization to offer high computing services from single
institute
 NEIF providing 100 Gb/s bandwidth but legacy campus network lacks infra
3
How ? Different projects…
ESNET
 Goal is to provide high speed interconnection network
 Using multiple DMZs based high speed zone to interconnect deptt by SDN switches with special
security policies different from campus network
SciPass
 SciPass describes a security-enhanced science DMZ. It uses an intrusion detection system (IDS) to
classify traffic as trusted and untrusted.
 Using Openflow switches as load balancers for IDS
 Trusted network can bypass the firewall rules
 Goal of this approach is to facilitate the utilization of 100 Gb/s inter-campus connectivity
4
Resilient SDN based HPZ Integration
• The HPZs are connected to BSs that are interconnected through a flexible
optical platform — the NeIF
5
Resilient SDN based HPz Integration…
• The integration is achieved through the BSs, which are equipped
with appropriate forwarding rules. BGP is used to make the HPZs
reachable from the campus networks and the Internet. Resilience
mechanisms ensure that traffic is rerouted via the BelWue core
network if the NeIF fails.
• There is no connection to the production environment and the
Internet
6
BelWue and HPz interconnection Infra
7
Prototype Implementation
 Implemented first prototype for HPZ Integration on Mininet on Local Testbed
 BelWue and Campus networks are production environments so virtualize environments
 HPZ equipped with test racks contain access to NeiF, management VPN, switch
 HP ProCurve 5406 switch configured with Openflow 1.3
 Access to this equipment via VPN to the management switch which has direct links to additional
network interface of the equipment
 Advantage:
• Management traffic does not influence the experiments in the testbed
• Access to the components is possible even in case of an error or misconfiguration
8
Issues it resolving?
 Integration is simple, cost effective
 Resilient
 Traffic engineering
 Security
 Incrementally deployment
 Cost efficient SDN-WAN
9
What’s the difference from traditional
network?
Any HPZ is connected to the NeIF platform
through an OpenFlow-capable BS, which is
operated by SDN controllers at BelWue
10
What are challenges or limitations?
 ISPs are reluctant to deploy due to critical edge and backbone operations
network device performs
 Replacement of infrastructure
 Require new functional design and skilled engineers for it
 Ensure seamless and incremental upgrade
 Performance testing before deployment
