End-to-End Simulation
• Provide a complete solution, allowing the companies to design and
develop utilizing the ETAP’s software and test and validate using
OPAL-RT’s HIL simulation framework
• Reduce risk and cost of grid automation solution deployment
• Leverage tools of ETAP and OPAL-RT to create a market-leading
solution
• Develop demo with grid simulation on OPAL-RT and with ETAP AGC
commanding generation levels.
• Objective is to create a solution showcasing ETAPs Real-Time product
portfolio and OPAL-RT’s simulation product portfolio.

• Problem
 Needed a system to replace an unreliable legacy solution.
 Optimize electrical power management
 No dynamic load shedding solution
• Solution: ETAP Real-Time PSMS and ILS
 ETAP PSMS was installed to provide monitoring and display
parameters of electrical power distribution and power generation systems
 ETAP ILS was used to perform calculations to establish
efficient operations and predict the effect of changes to these systems
 Test and simulate the AGC control system
• Benefits
 ETAP Intelligent Load Shedding (ILS) recognized problems within
the system and prompted the proper shedding of loads based on
the customer priorities
 ETAP ILS dynamically determines the best load shedding priority in just fractions of a
second. The system is fully redundant and provides complete optimization of key
generators at the facility.
Arzanah Island is part of ZADCO’s Satah field which is about 200
km north-west of Abu Dhabi. Water Injection facilities for Satah
field are located at this Island. Power is generated at 13.8kV by
Ruston make Gas Turbine Generators (RGT) installed between
late 1970s and early 1980s.
Sicon Oil & Gas Spa
• Project
• UC Irvine is combining novel strategies for energy efficiency, energy management,
and self-generation with research that positions the campus as one of the nation's
most advanced field laboratories for community energy generation and utilization,
and microgrid technology.
• The partnership is led by the UC Irvine Advanced Power and Energy Program in
collaboration Partners include ETAP, Siemens, MelRoK, Toyota, and UCI’s
Transportation and Distribution Services.
• Solution: ETAP Real-Time PSMS & MMC
 PSMS runs real-time load flow and short-circuit calculations (both balanced fault and
unbalanced fault) and using system online operating conditions determined by SLE
 Visualization of the renewable assets at the campus
 Optimizing the performance of the electric grid. Renewable generation, and advanced energy
storage that yields cost savings and reduces emissions.
• Goals
 To demonstrate a variety of existing and new smart grid technologies.
 Determining how smart grid technologies connect, communicate, and operate with each other.
 Reducing energy costs to customers by shifting usage loads to off-peak hours
