Educational measurement and
evaluation
Selecting and using standardized acheivement
test
Standardized test
 A standardized test is a measurement device
that is prepared by educational specialist
 A standardized test is one that is administered
under standardized or controlled conditions that
specify where, when, how, and for how long
children may respond to the questions
 A type of ability test that describe what a person
has learned to do is acheivement test
 A systematic procedure for determining the
amount a student learned through instruction
Standardized acheivement test
Standardized test Classroom test
 It is prepared by
educational specialist
 One time-feedback
 Standard question
 Specifict itme limit
 Objective
 No self assessment
 Emphasis on reading ,
writting and math skills
 It is crystal clear
 It cover the entire content
 It evaluate student
individual performance
 It is made by teacher
 Continous feedback
 Choiceof question
 Flexible time limit
 objective/ subjective
 Emphasis on self assessment
 Emphasis multiple intelligence
 Test are ambigious and
unclear
 Test donot cover entire
content
 It evaluate student growth
through out the year
Advantages of standardized
testingThese tests are usually scored by the computers or by persons
who are not known by the students.
1. It allows the students in districts, schools and states to get into
comparison. The absence of standardized testing means that
there will be no comparison to take place.
2. These tests have been giving accurate and reliable
comparisons in between sub-groups. Such sub-groups involve
data on socio-economic status, ethnicity, special needs, and
more
3. It is less time consuming and easier to administer.
4. .With standardized testing, the students are challenged to meet
a common standard by acquiring skills and content that goes
beyond the minimum requirements.
Disadvantages of standarized
test
1. Standardized tests can evaluate the
student’s individual performance than
his overall growth throughout the year.
2. It makes great stress on both the
students and the educators. The best
teachers are quitting their profession
daily due to the stress of preparing their
students to work on standardized
testing.
Use of standardized acheivement
test for school
 It is usually associated with instructional framework or established
standards providing the teachers with assistance for when and what
should be taught.
 It help to evaluate the extent to which the objectives of education are
being achieved
 It help to evaluate ,revise and improve the curriculum in the light of
these result
 To select talented pupil for special classes or courses
 To discover backward children who need help.
 To select student for the reward and scholorships
 To determine the general acheivement level of class and to judge the
teaching effeciency of teacher
 The teacher will come to know about general range of abilities of
student in a class
 By studing the result of student , the teacher will determine wheather
or not the student are working at their maximum capacity
Procedure for standardized
achievement test
 The stages for planning the standardized acheivement
test are:
 Deciding purpose of test
 Listing educational objectives of different areas of
knowledge
 Preparing table of specification
 Selecting appropriate type of items
 Preparing relevant test items
 Assembling the test
 Administering the test
 Scoring the test
 Appraising the test
