What made eLearning
so boring?
Nothing but text
Bland and colourless
How to wear
a $10 shirt
like a champ
Overview
In this course, we'll run you through
the foundational aspects of wearing a
$10 shirt like a champ.
What You Will Learn
- Confidence
- Swagger masterclass
- Shirt care techniques & principals

No challenge
No Variety
No interaction

Making it
Fun
Provide
variety
Colour can
be powerful
Adding personality
drives the narrative
Use animation to
force the learner to
discover content for
themselves
Challenge the
user regularly
Step 1:
Add some personality
Adding personality helps to drive a
narrative.
Characters can bring boring subjects
to life.
Introducing
Kevin
Used sparingly but had a
long lasting effect.
He’s not just a
pretty face.
Kevin E. Coach is
so hot right now!
Step 2:
Use Color
Familiarity and
consistency is
important
Use color, but be smart about it
We developed a
color system forming
associations
between color and
types of content
Step 3:
Animation
Animation piques the learners interest
Use animation as a way to provide feedback
to the end user
Credit: uxinmotion.com
Step 4:
Challenge the user
Challenging the learner improves learning
outcomes
Inviting the user to interact increases
engagement
Credit Bhakti Al Akbar
Step 5:
Provide variety
If you’re creating screen after screen of visually
identical content, you’ll soon see engagement
drop off.

We spent nearly 2 years updating all of our training
resources and iterating to a point where we we’d
developed the foundations for how we’d produce and
deliver online training resources going forward…
Turns out creating quality, engaging content isn’t as
easy as I thought.
Nearly 2 years go by...
Credit: Laurent Duvoux
Our resource library
included over 150 units of
competency, containing an
average of 50 screens
That’s
7500
It’s time
consuming
custom designed
screens
Learning Designers
It’s expensive
You need specialists:
Animators
Graphic Designers
Web developers
It was a
maintenance
nightmare
Files were
duplicated 100s
of times like
templates
Managing
7500
individual files
sucked
Files went
missing Files became
corrupt
!

It was time to make
a change…
and it couldn’t be a
better time to try
The web was changing rapidly.
Flash was on its way out, webApps were on
their way in and a revolution was brewing.
SaaS was about to become a thing...
Solving the Creation Problem
Simple enough that anyone could use it
Login from anywhere in the world
Duplicate content from a global template
Have weblinks for review
Export SCORM objects
Draft and Published versions
The Brief:
We came up with something like this...
Form-based templates
We’d solved the problem of
content creation and learner
engagement, but the
headaches didn’t end.
The Business Model
Didn’t Make Sense
Why the disconnect between course
creation and course deliver?
Too much friction between those managing
course development and course deployment
The most common content standard in
eLearning was developed 20 years ago!!
Credit: Glen Jones - dribbble.com
Unifying
Authoring
Delivery of
Courses
The upside
Learning designers would have more control
No need to rely on IT experts to manage
resources
More granular reporting and analytics
One login

How did this
work out for us?
Scaling up
Simplified duplication saved us days of time
We could White label our content library with
cross-campus mirroring
We could white label our content library but also
allow customers to contextualise the content
without losing our IP
We were always first to market
We reduced costs significantly
We no longer needed to subject our staff to
unnecessary hardship

Too good not
to share
A new company was
formed to create eCoach
March 2016
eCoach BETA release
July 2016
Commerical release
It’s good - but it could be
so much better
We had some great success
We made some mistakes along the way
We rely heavily on customer support

Getting back to basics
We’re not here to compete with
Blackboard and Canvas
Making resources as a learning
designer, and getting successful
results as a learner should be front
and center.

Customer centric
design
Customer centric design has become the foundation
of our product development process.
● We only hire staff who have a customer focus
● We talk to our customers every day
● We do usability testing
● We do workshops
● We act on this information by developing user
personas for Barry
Our mission
Our mission is to make online learning
more accessible to everyone
Focus on simplicity without
compromising functionality
