Skype with Mr. Gowin and Sarah Pena

Overview & Purpose                                                                       Indiana Standards Addressed

My students will be given the opportunity to Skype with two of the missionaries that     SS 4.1.14
                                                                                         SS 4.3.2
we pray for on a daily basis. These two Skype experiences will take place at different   LA 4.2.7

Information                             Prior to our Skype experience we will

                                        located in, and what types of questions
                                        we can ask them. As a class we will find
                                        the countries through an online map of
                                        the world and predict how the country
                                        our missionaries are on will be different
                                        from the country we live in today. We
                                        will also use this opportunity to
                                        incorporate math and estimate how far
                                        away they are.

                                        During this time I will also explain Skype
                                        and how we will be able to use it to
                                        communicate with Mr. Gowin and Sarah.
                                        We will have a discussion on
                                        appropriate conversation when there are
                                        multiple people wishing to talk at the
                                        same time and how we should treat it as
                                        though our missionaries were right there
                                        with us. I plan on also explaining the
                                        chance for glitches or delay while using
                                        Skype so that the students are not
                                        shocked if there is difficulty with the
                                        internet when we get started.
Activity                                Prior to our conversation I will guide the

                                        work together for a period of time, and
                                        then I will let them work on their own
                                        and/or in groups to devise questions
                                        related to the mission field our country

Summary   Overall, I think that this will give a
          personal look at two missionaries that
          our class prays for on a daily basis. It
          will put a face and a country with a
          name. The class will be able to use
          technology in the form of Skype to
          communicate with two people who they
          otherwise would have no immediate
          contact – especially face to face. This
          will enhance their communication,
          questioning, and reflection skills.

Skype lesson
