What is a Smart Projector?
• A Smart projector is a small hardware device designed to
project content from a smartphone, camera, tablet,
notebook or memory device onto a wall or other flat
surface.
• Smart projectors use either an LED or laser light source
which effectively eliminates the need for lamp replacement
over the useful life of a projector.
• Smart projectors are tiny battery powered projectors-as
small as a mobile phone-or even smaller : these projectors
can even embed inside phones or digital cameras.

Emerging Technology
Virtual Reality in a projector-
enables setup; a French start-up
Catopsys are doing R&D to provide
a panoramic, virtual reality image
throughout a room for gaming.
Key Technology
Voice-assistance command (Alexa),
App-Based controlling systems are
providing a competitive-edge over
traditional projectors with only
base technology.
Base Technology
Liquid Crystal Display, controls
how much light each pixel gets and
forms the base technology of
projectors.
Pacing Technology
There has been discussions on
applying Raspberry Pi (IoT) – Single
computer board, as 98% of phones
are driven through this tech. Would
help in ease of sending files directly
to the projector.
It is a technology that basically involves using tiny mirrors on a chip that directs
light from a white light source.
Each tiny mirror controls a pixel on the target picture, and depending on how long
it’s on, the target pixel gets brighter or dimmer, since it has only on and off states.
Between the light source and the mirrors, is a color wheel that splits light into the
three primary colors(red, green & blue) & each mirror controls all three light beams
for its designated pixel.
DLP
(Digital Light Processing)
An LCoS projector uses a small liquid-crystal display (LCD) to control
how much light each pixel gets.
The light source is white light based - either LED or diffused laser.
LCoS
(Liquid Crystal on Silicon)
LBS projectors are different, creating the image one pixel at a time
using a directed laser beam.
If we scan the image fast enough(usually over 60hz) , we don’t notice
this pixel-by-pixel design.
Advantages to LBS over DLP and LCoS:- Focus free, Low power
consumption and Small size

Key features
 Reflective imaging technology
using micro mirror.
 RGB color delivered
sequentially.
 Reflective imaging technology
using liquid crystal.
 RGB colors delivered
simultaneously.
 Image scanning technology
using directed laser beams.
 RGB color delivered
simultaneously.
Advantages
 Compact & small size.
 High contrast.
 No color degradation.
 High resolution.
 No rainbow effect.
 Smooth pixel edges.
 Focus free
 Low power consumption.
 Small size.
Disadvantages
 Rainbow effect.
 Sharp pixel edges.
 Larger size.
 Potential color degradation.
 Laser is expensive.
 Speckle - Eye safety.
Principles employed in Smart projectors (1/2)
Bluetooth: Radio wave communication. It has a card-like attachment called
Bluetooth adapter which sends and receives data.
Flash Memory Cards: An electronic non-volatile computer memory storage
medium that can be electrically erased and reprogrammed.
Wi-Fi: The radio signals are transmitted from antennas and routers that signals
are picked up by Wi-Fi receivers, such has computers and cell phones that are
ready with Wi-Fi cards.
Principles employed in Smart projectors (2/2)
Combinational Optical System: Cannon implemented an LCOS (Liquid Crystal On Silicon) reflective liquid crystal
panel in the image display device. It achieves high luminance, high image quality, and compactness. Images
projected using LCOS do not have the black grid-like shadows which means the images are smooth and beautiful.
High Precision Aspherical Lenses: It is developed using high-precision grinding technologies. It was needed
because multiple multimedia projectors are often set up and used in combination, it is important that images
are projected without distortion from corner to corner.
Voice Assistance: These are virtual assistants which uses natural language processing (NLP) to match user text
or voice input to executable commands.
Hand-Gesture Controlled: Gesture control devices recognize and interpret human body movements, allowing
the user to interact with a computer system.
Applications (1/2)
• Cicret Smart Bracelet
• A bracelet wearable that can project a touch-controlled screen onto our arm.
• Cicret uses a Smart projector to throw your mobile’s screen into your arm.
• It features eight proximity sensors which the bracelet uses to detect your finger position to
feedback controls.
Applications (2/2)
• Smart watches with Smart projector
• It allows project an image with high quality graphics and brightness.
• The watch doesn’t have any button, except of one touch sensitive button, with which you can
manipulate the projection.
Challenges Faced
• Budget can be stretched at
businesses who invest in the
latest software updates, but
additional ongoing costs for IT
assets can be hard to justify.
• Usually wires run over the ceiling and into
the wall to enable device c, making it hard
to amend the basic of problems. Standing
on a table in the middle of a meeting to
resolve these issues aren’t the answer.
• It’s a frequent occurrence that both
obscures the view of
the presentation and blinds the
speaker at the same time.
• Image quality gets lost from afar. Distorted
colours, lines & dots on the images and faint
projection create problem.

Solutions
• It is a collaborative workspace for
teachers and students, groups of
students, or the whole class to create
and work on projects with multimedia
content.
• It allows the teacher to create a set of
questions in under five minutes that
students can answer on Chromebooks,
desktop computers, smartphones or
tablets.
• Teachers can use gamification in
classrooms to see greater retention of
lesson as it’s fun way to deliver content
to students who are already receptive to
the action-reward system from playing
video games.
• it is used for hands-on learning and
allows teachers to create engaging
content. Teachers can install program on
their home computer and send lessons
directly to classroom. Smart

Response
Thank You!
• We might get questions from technology classification slides:
• Q1. What are the emerging technologies coming up in the space of Smart
projectors. Which all companies have adopted it and what further research is
going on into it. (Raspberry Pi, IOT)
• What could be the life of our base technology (LCD) and which other technology
has the potential to outplace it? (OLED-organic light emitting diodes)
• What are various companies manufacturing smart projectors and what are the
differences in their key/base/emerging technology? How every other brand is
different from each other.
• How companies are trying to create more value for the consumer and reduce the
cost? Can you quote any architectural or modular innovation in projectors space
to support your answer.
• What solutions you would like to propose to solve your challenges presented
here in your challenges slide.
