socialization and its influence on our self-identities. Instructions for what to include are
provided in the speaker notes section for each slide, which can be accessed by clicking
the View tab at the top, then clicking Notes. As you work through the presentation
template, you will replace the instructions in the speaker notes section with actual speaker
notes—that is, sentences that represent what you would say about each slide if you were
to give the presentation in person.

SOC 100 Wk 3 – Field Study Observation
Part I – Participant Observation
Sociologists use research to collect information about society and apply their
findings to everyday life to better understand the human condition. Sociologists
can investigate people in their natural environments by becoming part of their
everyday settings to observe and study participants.
Imagine that you are a practicing sociologist who is researching the behavior of
social groups in social settings.
Conduct a participant observation in a setting where a group of people gather.
Examples of places with groups include malls, grocery stores, libraries,
restaurants, coffee shops, parks, schools, employee break rooms, parking lots,
pubs, sporting events, or your local neighborhood.
Station yourself in a safe location where you can observe participants for 60
minutes without having to approach or engage the public. You are just observing
people, not interacting with them.
Use the Field Study Observation Template to collect field notes on the following
data about the individuals in your observation, as you perceive it:
 Gender/sex
 Race/ethnicity
 Age
(Your numbers do not need to be exact, but try to make them as accurate as
possible. You do not need to submit these notes with your assignment—they are
only for you to reference to guide your observation.)
Part II – Reflection Report
Write a 525- to 700-word report about your observation. Include the following
information:
1) Setting
 Describe the setting for your observation, including the location, time of
day (morning, midday, afternoon, evening), and weather.
2) Group Dynamics
 What patterns of group behavior did you observe that may have been
influenced by the setting?
 What patterns of group behavior did you observe based on gender/sex?
 What patterns of group behavior did you observe based on race/ethnicity?
 What patterns of group behavior did you observe based on age?
 Which cultural norms did you observe among your participants? Explain
your answer in several sentences using at least one example.
 What did you observe overall about the group dynamics of your
participants? Explain your answer in several sentences using at least one
example.
 What social or economic factors might have influenced the group dynamics
you observed? Explain your answer in several sentences.
3) Real-World Applications
 Consider how you could use a participant observation exercise in the future
to study patterns in other social groups, such as with families, coworkers, or other
organizations.
 Explain how observing social patterns could help your interactions in a
group. Give at least one reason why improving your understanding of group
dynamics can help you to succeed in culturally diverse environments.
Submit your assignment.

SOC 100 Wk 4 – Social Inequality in the Media
Watch 30–60 minutes of a production from current media that illustrates examples
of social stratification and inequalities, such as a sitcom, drama, movie, or
documentary. Examples include productions like Blackish, Sons of Anarchy,
Family Guy, Empire, CSI, BlacKkKlansman, Chicago Fire, Orange is the New
Black, NCIS, When They See Us, Pose, Game of Thrones, or Law & Order.
Contact your instructor for approval if you are unsure if a certain media production
fits the assignment.
Take notes while you watch to record examples of the behavior patterns that
reflect social stratification and inequality.
Refer to the Reading Guide: Deviance, Social Stratification, and Inequality for
more information on theoretical perspectives on these topics to assist with this
assignment.
Write a 400- to 600-word paper in which you discuss the TV show or film as it
relates to race, gender, and social class stratification. Include the following:
 Provide the name of the show or film you selected and a brief summary of
the plot and setting of the story.
 Identify and describe at least one example of social deviance that you
observed. Which social structures or norms could have contributed to this act of
deviance?
 Identify and describe at least two examples of sociological inequalities that
you observed. Which social structures or norms could have contributed to these
inequalities?
 Indicate the theoretical perspective—functionalist, conflict, or symbolic
interactionist—that you would use to explain the social inequalities you observed.
Explain your reasons for choosing this perspective.
 Make connections between the social stratification of class, race, and
gender that you observed in the TV show or film, and the ways that it represents
inequality in our society.
Submit your assignment.

SOC 100 Wk 5 – Social MovementPresentation
Social movements are usually caused by disruptions in society based on a need for
social change. Social movements can start from a grassroots level, like the Me Too
Movement, or from changes at a macro-level, such as gun policies by politicians.
Identify a social issue happening in the United States today that is relevant to your
interests and that you would like to see changed. You can choose a micro-level
problem, such as speeding in your neighborhood, or a macro-level problem, such as
racial inequality. Examples include problems such as graffiti in parks, gang violence,
illegal immigration, gender inequality, police brutality, online bullying, destruction of
community property, personal property theft, parking violations, speeding, improper
disposal of pet waste, gun laws, or legalization of marijuana.
Imagine that you are part of a social movement or a local community forum that has
formed around this issue to address the need for social change.
Create a 6- to 10-slide Microsoft® PowerPoint® presentation on a social movement
for change in your community that you could share with local politicians or other
influential leaders.
Include the following in your presentation, using speaker notes as needed for details:
 Describe the current factors that are influencing the social issue you would
like to change.
 Provide at least 2–3 examples that explain why this social issue is a problem
for your community or society.
 Describe the social issue through the lens of one of these theoretical
perspectives:
 Functionalism
 Conflict
 Symbolic interactionism
 Describe the social structures you would recommend to address this issue.
Explain the need for these social structures and their potential impact on creating
social change.
 Explain how a movement for social change in this issue could affect society.
For example, changes in gun control laws may reduce the number of single-person
shootings.
