STEP BY STEP IN 10 EASY STEPS
How to write an essay.
STEP 1: READ AND UNDERSTAND THE
QUESTION.
 Why are good sleep habits important for
students?
What is the question asking us to write...reasons! Reasons why sleep is
important for students. Why do students need to sleep well? What
happens if they do/do not sleep well? How does sleep affect grades?
And so on.
STEP 2: BRAINSTORM SOME TOPICS
Brainstorm
 Concentration
 To work efficiently
 To be successful
 To respect for classmates and teachers
 For good health...for healthy thinking....to not get
ill...not feel tired
 To have more energy
 To not have a confused brain
 To not sleep in the lesson
 To come to class on time
STEP 3: CHOOSE WHICH TOPICS YOU WILL
WRITE ABOUT
Brainstorm
 Concentration
 To work efficiently
 To be successful
 To respect for classmates and teachers
 For good health...for healthy thinking....to not get
ill...not feel tired
 To have more energy
 To not have a confused brain
 To not sleep in the lesson
 To come to class on time
STEP 4: WRITE A THESIS WITH YOUR TWO
TOPICS
Thesis statement:
Health and concentration are two main reasons
why good sleep habits are important for
students.
Or...
Two main reasons why good sleep habits are
important for students are, health and
concentration.
STEP 5: WRITE A TOPIC SENTENCE FOR EACH OF
YOUR TOPICS
Health
Topic sentence 1:
Firstly, good sleep habits affect students’
health, and this is very important.
Concentration
Topic sentence 2:
Secondly, good sleep habits affect
concentration and this is also important for
students’ success.
REMEMBER THE EEFDR MENU!
Supports should be:
 Explanation
 Example
 Fact
 Definition
 Reason/result
STEP 6: DEVELOP YOUR SUPPORTING IDEAS
FOR EACH TOPIC (SENTENCE)
Topic sentence 1:
Firstly, good sleep habits affect students’ health and this is very important.
Healthy thinking.
What it means.... (explanation, fact)
understand easily...make correct/good decisions...pay attention in lesson...better communication...body needs to relax
How can we affect this?
Good diet...go to bed early...don’t study too much late at night...don’t sleep too much...
Fact: Good sleep and diet are both important for people’s health in general; however, for students, these things are much
more important for their success.
To not be ill. (explanation, fact)
What it means...getting headaches...more common illnesses...depression...malaise...
How can we affect this? (what is the connection to students sleep/study habits?)
Fact: lack of sleep directly affects the immune system and the digestive system
Not feel tired. (fact, reason/result)
Balance between not sleeping enough and sleeping too much.
Example: (balance of sleep----health----being a successful student show a chain of ideas)
A student gets the right amount of sleep and can wake up on time. This student can feel more active than students who
have bad sleep habits. In addition to this, a student with proper sleep habits will do better in their courses.
Concentration
Topic sentence 2:
Secondly, good sleep habits affect concentration and this is also
important for students’ success.
Focus on lessons..(definition)
Concentration is the ability to focus on lessons and this is a
neccessary thing for being a successful student.
Not sleeping in class... (reason/result, fact)
If you sleep in class, you will miss important information. If you
miss this information, you won’t pass the courses.
Learn more efficently. (example)
Example: A student who doesn’t sleep in class is able to answer
questions and focus on the lessons. In addition to this, this
student can pass and be successful.

STEP 7: PUT THE IDEAS TOGETHER IN
GRAMMATICALLY CORRECT SENTENCES
Body paragraph.
