1. The three primary elements of knitting are the needle, cam, and sinker. 2. The needle is the main knitting tool that rises and receives new loops. There are three types of needles. 3. The cam is a mechanical device that converts rotary motion into reciprocating motion for the needles. There are engineering cams and knitting cams which include knit, tuck, and miss cams. 4. The sinker is a thin metal plate that acts between needles to form, hold down, and knock over loops.

- 2. Experiment No: 03 Date:26th May 2014 Experiment Name: Study on the Primary / Basic elements of Knitting. Knitting is the interlocking of one or more yarns through a series of loops. In knitting there are three basic elements,such as— 1.Needle; 2.Cam; 3.Sinker. Needle: The fundamental element in construction of knitted fabrics is the knitting needle.Needle is the main knitting tools & also the principal element of machine knitting. There are three types of needles— 1.Bearded Needle; 2.Latch Needle; 3.Compound Needle; Figure: Function of Needles: Needle is rised to clear the old loop from hook & to receive the new loop above it on needle stem. Cam: Cam is the second primary knitting element. Cams are the devices that converts the rotary into suitable reciprocating actions for the needles or other elements.Its the mechanical devices which convert the rotary machine drive into a suitable reciprocating action for the needles or other elements. The cams are of two types— 1.Engineering cam& 2.Knitting cam. Knitting cam is again classified into three types-- a)Knit cam; b)Tuck cam c)Miss cam. Figure:
- 3. Function of Cam:The function of cam is given below— 1.Produce the motion of needles. 2.Drive the needle. 3.Formation of loop. Sinker: The sinker is the third primary knitting element.It is a thin metal plate with an individual or collective action approximately at right angles from the hook side between adjoining needles. Figure: Function of Sinker: It may perform one or more of the following functions dependent upon the machines knitting action and consequent sinker and movement: -- Loop formation -- Holding – down & -- Knocking -over
