This invention provides a system and method for acquiring static side images of vehicles in motion using video surveillance cameras along toll roads. The system detects vehicles in motion in video frames and stitches together relevant frames to create a single static image of each vehicle as it passes. This allows toll road operators to photograph vehicles for identification and monitoring purposes, without needing direct access or space alongside the road for stationary cameras. The invention is intended to assist toll road operators in Brazil with maintaining traffic order and vehicle supervision on highways.

The vehicle supervision in Brazilian highways has an important role in the maintenance of public order in the traffic. Hence, the present invention is a system for acquisition of static images of objects in motion from videos in the surveillance, such as lateral images of vehicles which move in toll roads. Moreover, this invention also describes a method which consists in a process of detection of objects and video stitching. In many Brazilian toll roads, vehicles in motion should be photographed sidelong. Common cameras cannot be used for this goal, mainly, because there is no enough space between the roads that allows the acquisition of photos of whole vehicles.
