This document provides best practices for utilizing college students as mentors. It discusses the history and success of the TeamMates mentoring program, which began in 1991 pairing college athletes with middle school students. The benefits of college mentors are that they are close in age to establish strong relationships with youth, can help equip mentees with skills for college, and make college seem like a real possibility. When identifying potential college mentors, qualities like commitment, motivation, and having time are important to consider. Training and ongoing support from campus liaisons is also key to ensure effective mentoring. The goal is to tap into the pool of willing college student volunteers at various Nebraska and Iowa universities to reach 10,000 TeamMate mentors
