Moving on from my case study 1 I went on to assess my other options of looking at a similar
product to the one that I’m hoping to make. So while I was on the internet browser I came
across this short documentary on YouTube which was 15 minutes long and was a referee
documentary called ‘Behind the Whistle’. There was a lot of voiceover and archive footage
which helped with the flow of the documentary. This was pivotal otherwise it would’ve been
boring just with interviews taking place. It was a great watch and I found it fascinating from
start to finish in terms of the film language as what they said all made sense and the
communication was at a very high standard with different camera shots and sequences
which consisted of medium shots and close-ups. I feel like the content was put together very
elegantly and productively. The documentary consisted of referee interviews just like what I
want to do and their opinions on the referring style. You get to see referee’s such as Bobby
Madley who talks about his steps into the refereeing platform and the challenges he faced in
order to get to where he is. It was very well documented and the interviews were organised
and set up correctly. I took a lot of things from that documentary and am hoping to use it in
my own production. So product is put together with these interviews from referees and I feel
like it’s been put like this because filmmakers want viewers to acknowledge the hard work
and determination these referee’s put in order to be where they are at the moment. So the
filmmakers just want to showcase that by setting the documentary out like this. The audience
can take a lot from this documentary in terms of referring. For example, in the interviews you
see how much it means to them to do this as a day job, plus we get to see the passion and
courage they show to be on top of the world. Viewers can possibly see this on the facial
expression of the referees that they show when taking part in these interviews. I can
personally tell how much it means to them and some of them have worked all of their lives to
be where they are now.
This particular product was directed and produced by a group of friends; Chris Feenan,
Matthew Newton and William Defesta. They are an independent group have their own
YouTube channel where they upload all of the video’s that they made. I don't know much
about how they funded to produce this product but I assume that they camera’s where theirs
and the interviews were organised by them doing some research and contacting various
people in order to sort out and meet up with professional referees. I’m planning to go through

the same route so hopefully I will follow the same steps in order to secure expertise
opinions. The product was initially just uploaded on the channel and viewed from there. The
target audience for this product is kids and even adults that want to get into refereeing as we
witness the encouragement in the documentary where we have referees talking about the
steps you have to go through in order to become a referee and how much of a relief it is
once you make it into a professional stage e.g. money and luxury. So whoever wants to
become a referee I would encourage them to go and watch it. I feel like they were successful
in reaching to this target audience as there was many aspects where they covered in terms
of getting in referring and what you have to do e.g. sign up, train yourself and prepare.
