- 1. On the contrary, I moved on to find another similar product to the one that I’m hoping to create. So while I was doing some research on the web I came across this football based documentary which was about referees and their ordinary day lives. The 10 minute video was about a group of young kids getting trained to become top professional referee’s and also the documentary has a look at other professional referees who have worked and refereed at the biggest possible stage. There is a lot of archive footage where we see this is and there are a few ongoing interviews that take place within this documentary which relates to the job roles and decision makings of referees who go through huge amounts of pressure in order to gain persistence, plus experience at the highest possible level. However when we’re talking about the filmmakers job I feel like we should give him credit as the camera shots were very good with a variety of different angles introduced to show the versatility of the producer and his team. There were plenty of medium shots, close-ups, long shots and establishing shots. For example, when the interviewee was talking you could see that they were in the correct position because where he or she was looking (at the interviewer, not the camera) which all made sense. Moving on to the content which I found exhilarating as it was all relevant to the audience and appropriate for any young kid that was watching as there was no strong language or adult humour. The product was put together with all of these interviews taking place where each represented something different. For example, the interview with Tony Butler (Referee assessor) showed him giving advice to fellow referees, whereas the other interviews were much more formal where they were faced the interview just talking and giving their opinions on refereeing. I feel like the reason that it was put together like this is because the filmmaker was only adjudicated an allowance of 10 minutes to create this documentary which proved vital for him to gather and edit in as much as footage as he can in order for it to be the way it is. The audience can definitely take away a huge amount of meaning from this product as it showcases the real identity of referee’s and the hard work that goes on behind the scenes to ensure that the country produce the best possible referees out there. For example, the Hertfordshire Football Association which is runs a referee academy determined to find the next Howard Webb or Mark Clattenburg. As they are teaching young kids, which is how the FA is looking to develop the Referee’s triangle pyramid e.g. the levels that are displayed on the pyramid. So the audience can find out and be influenced by the amount of dedication and hard work that is being put in to find advanced skill workers in the country, in this case, referees. The product was directed and shot by Oliver Joe who is an independent organisation who funded the product himself and invested his own money in buying equipment to ensure that he has the best possible platform to create this documentary of his. The product was This picture on the side is a shot from the documentary where you’re able to see the name of the production and it was about referees and the role they play in officiating games.
- 2. uploaded to his own YouTube channel back in 2015 on the 8th of May. The target audience for this particular product is football fans or aspiring referees who want to reflect on the roles referee’s play in the sport. The intentions was to showcase the day in day out lives of referee’s and to give an insight of what happens behinds the scenes in terms of developing young kids into top professional referees. I feel like Oliver was successful in reaching to this target audience as he received positive comments from the public and managed to share it with 18,000 people who viewed it. Additionally, there were even comments from referee who gave their take on the documentary. Also, the scene is set in a urban area which shows that this documentary was shot years ago. Camera: This a close-up of a former referee who appeared on this documentary to give his take on the situation of referees and the thoughts regarding the animosity referees have nowadays in terms of the money they are being paid, plus the luxury. Structure: The documentary was set out by introducing referees to the audience who explained their experiences to the viewers on why they went through certain paths in order to make it at the highest possible level.
