In addition, I had to find other products that linked and that were similar to the one that I was
hoping to create. So once again on my exploration of documentaries and short films I came
across this short video which was by FIFA TV and uploaded onto their YouTube channel
where nearly 15,000 people have viewed it. This short video is called ‘VAR: The Story So
Far’ which reveals to us the outcome of this whole project and gives us an insight into what
we can expect with the use of this technology in the game. The language analysis was
tremendous (good camera shots and sequences which looked good on our screens) as the
interviewee's used high amounts of terminology in terms of footballing and the content was
unique, plus authentic. Although it lasts 3 minutes you still get a good understanding of what
VAR is and how it helps match officials run games. For those that don't know what VAR is?
Well VAR stands for Video Assistant Referee which involves a group of 3 people who work
together to analyse and evaluate decisions made by the official referee by watching video
replays of incidents. This is what video explains and showcases with archive footage of VAR
intervening. The product is put together with different expert opinions being forwarded from
referee’s to the Head of Technology Innovation. Those professionals have come together to
produce this short film to put their perspectives forward and to give real evidence of what
you can expect from their creation and whole project of VAR. The reason for them putting
together in this way is because viewers are getting a better sense of why technology is being
used in the game and what the benefits are as referee’s are having less pressure applied on
them with the use and help of Video technology which is a blessing for FIFA as we see in the
visuals. The audience can take a lot from this product in terms how VAR works and sets up.
They’ll also get to witness the real identity of VAR and how people are working behind the
scenes to ensure that decisions are fair and unbiased.
The product was made by FIFA who are a large football organization who describe
themselves as the International Governing Body of Association Football. The product itself
was without about funded by themselves as they run football and own the introduction of
technology and VAR to football. The short documentary was advertised on all platforms and
uploaded to their own YouTube channel called FIFA TV. The target audience for this video is
all footballs fans who want to find out about VAR and what it’s all about. The content
involved is all relevant and appropriate for all age groups and genders. I feel like they were
successful in reaching to their audience as the expert opinions may have persuaded them to
take more note of the views that were portrayed and showcased in the short drama.
This a scene
from the short
video which
describes the
procedure of
VAR and how it
is portrayed on
the screens.

Camera: This is an over the
shoulder shot which
showcases what’s going on
and the audience are able
the see point of views from
that characters own
perspective. In this case we
can see the referee who is
taking a look at the footage
which he has an impact
and has to make a call on
to help out the match
official.
Structure: The short video starts
off with an introduction to how
VAR operates by portraying this
in a archive footage which shows
the audience how the referees
play on to give certain decisions.
Also there is interviews which
fully explain the outcome of the
technology and why it is used in
that way.
Industry: This particular video was shown
on FIFA TV which shows the technology
has high expectations and was initially
found out by the company/ big
organisation themselves. The way it is
illustrated in the video shows that there is
a lot of work going on in the background
to ensure that decisions given are fair
and honest.
