Additionally, I had to carry on with the development of research and to ensure that I have
watched as many as documentaries as I could to pick up on new ideas that I can portray for
my own production of the documentary that I’m hoping to make. So I had another look at a
different documentary which was called ‘Behind the scenes with a top referee’. The short
video was about the referee Xavi Estrada Fernandez who gives us an insight of how his
normal day routine plans out and what procedures he has to go through in order to manage
a game. In the video we follow his every move leading up to the UEFA European under 21
Championships where he refereed quite a few games. However, when we talk about the
camera shots I feel like they done an impressive job in terms of the way they captured
certain movements from different angles. During the interview there was basic camera shots
e.g. medium shots and once the archive footage came into play then the camera started to
pick other various camera shots. Also, there was fast tempo soundtrack which kept the
documentary flowing rather than it being tedious and dull. The content that they used felt all
relevant to the subject and was appropriate for all audiences. The product was put together
to showcase a referee’s normal day life and this visualized and put into a short video which I
thought turned out well. The reason for them putting together this way is because they only
had 5 minutes to add all of the footage to and ensure that all the suitable had not been left
out. So they did their best to edit and add in a 5 minute video. The audience can take a lot
from this video in terms of lifestyles and how much hard work it takes to be earning high
wages. They can reflect on how you have to sacrifices certain things in order to work in a
good job like we see in this video with the referee Xavi.
The product was made by UEFA and uploaded on their YouTube channel called UEFA TV.
Who are the governing body for the football association in Europe so it is regarded as a very
big organization? The product was funded by the company themselves as all the content
and copyrights are owned by UEFA as we see in the documentary itself with all the logos
and themes which are partners of UEFA. Initially, the product was shared on all social media
platforms, but was then uploaded to their own YouTube channel. The target audience for this
particular product is football fans who want to know how the lives of referee’s plan out and
what they have to do in order to cope with the pressure of managing 90 minutes games
week in week out. I feel like they were successful in reaching out to their audience from all of
the positive comments I saw and how much support there was to UEFA for creating and
documenting something important like this. Also, football fans not only in Europe, but all over
the globe are aware that referee’s play a big role in the footballing world so they were eager
to find out how they live their ordinary day lives with this short video.
Here is a shot of Xavi
himself who was the
main character in this
short video as the
camera follows his
every single throughout
this Under 21 European
Championships.

Camera: This is a long shot
where we can see a group
of referees discussing what
they need to do and how
they need to prepare for
the game that they are
going officiate. Long shots
are usually used to show
the scene setting or in
other words an exterior
shot which showcases that.
Structure: The short film has
started off by introducing referee
Xavi Estrada Fernandez and
giving a story of how his life and
programme schedule’s out as a
referee.
Mise-en-scene: As we already
know it’s a long shot we can see
that this scene is shot in a
meeting room / dining room
where referees come to eat and
have a conversation with one
another.
