Unit 8
Task 5
Date Career Stage Explanation - What you will be doing
and skills learnt
2018 - 2021 University Year 1 -Year 3 If i get the required grades to get into
university and am chosen to do the
course, then i would like to study a film
production course. This course is full time
and would last a total of three years,
learning both the practical and academic
side of the film industry.
- During the first year, i would be
studying a variety of different
topics within the film industry.
These include film and television
practice, constructing
documentaries, film theory and
analysis, and the art of cinema. By
studying these topics, it enables
me to understand different genres
within film and television. I will also
be able to thoroughly engage in
different projects that require
different approaches, due to
learning both the practical and
theoretical sides to them during the
first year. Therefore, I will be able
to complete and accept jobs that
require a specific set of skills, from
documentaries to television. In film
practice I will have the opportunity
to explore different aspects, such
as editing, sound, production
design, screenwriting, directing,
cinematography, producing and
directing, before specialising in
directing in the second year.
- In the second year, my specialist
area will be directing and I will be
able to work closely with the
cinematographer, screenwriter,
producer, editor and a sound
producer, which will give me the
ability to work in larger crews. The
subjects I will study are drama
production: skills and major
projects, aesthetics of television
drama, cinema, fantasy,
contemporary British Cinema and
television, contemporary world
cinema and structure and style of
stories.
- In the third year, I will work on a
dissertation, and drama,

documentary and commercials
production. Subjects of study
include: advanced production,
screenwriting and documentary
production and professional
practice. These topics mean I will
learn to collaborate creatively as I
develop production specialisms in
directing. I will also gain the
transferable and cognitive skills
necessary for lifelong personal and
professional development within
the film industry. During the course
i will gain experience of working
with professional actors,
negotiating with facilities,
equipment hire companies and
local authorities.
- During the time at university, I can
also apply for work experience at a
television production company
such as the BBC or ITV.
2022 Full time job - Runner After completing the course at university, I
will have a showreel of work to show to an
employer, which displays my skills. I will
take on a job as a runner, and complete
several roles, ranging from running
errands, conveying messages, sourcing
props, cast assistant, to working directly
with the producer, director and senior
production staff members. From being a
runner, i will be able to observe
professionals whilst working, understand
the professional environment and the
structure of the production process across
films and television. Whilst being a runner,
i will learn key communication and
organisation skills. I will also have the
chance to build a network, whilst working
with other runners and entry level people,
who may recommend me for other jobs
around the industry.
2023 Full time job - Assistant
Director
After being a full time runner, and viewing
the professional environment, i would aim
to become an assistant director. Using
previous work experience, qualifications
and a showreel, i may be able to impress
others and convince them to let me work
for them. Whilst doing this job i will be
working closely with the director, in
drawing up a shooting schedule and other
filming tasks. I will hopefully gain several

skills from being an assistant director.
These include leadership and
communication skills and being able to
multitask. From here, i would have a lot of
experience within the industry, and
enough confidence to venture off on my
own as a freelance director.
Inspiration
Patricia Lea "Patty" Jenkins was born on July 24 1971, and is an American film director and
screenwriter. She best known for her debut feature Monster, based on the life of convicted
serial killer Aileen Wuornos, directing the pilot episode of AMC's hit show The Killing and as
the director of the film Wonder Woman for Warner Brothers.
Jenkins began her career as a painter at The Cooper Union in New York City. Upon
transitioning to filmmaking, she spent eight years as a First Assistant Camera Person/Focus
Puller. After attending the AFI in Los Angeles, she wrote and directed Monster. Monster was
named the Best Film of the Year and Third Best Film of the Decade, and Charlize Theron
went on to win several awards for her performance in the film, winning the Oscar, Golden
Globe, SAG Award, and numerous other critics' awards in the Best Actress category.
In 2015, Jenkins signed on as director for the $150 million DC Extended Universe film,
Wonder Woman. Wonder Woman premiered in 2017 and gave Jenkins the biggest domestic
opening of all-time for a female director (surpassing previous record holder Fifty Shades of
Grey by Sam Taylor-Johnson). Jenkins also became the first female director of an American
studio superhero movie, with the film grossing $500 million at the box office in just 14 days.
Wonder Woman eventually became the highest-grossing movie directed by a woman,
surpassing previous record holder Mamma Mia! by Phyllida Lloyd.
I chose Patty Jenkins as my inspiration because she hasn't succeeded throughout her whole
career, with many of her previous films falling apart or being delayed. Despite her failures,
she managed to pull through and have Wonder Woman be the first of 19 films between the
Marvel and DC movies universes to be centered on a female character, and have a female
director. In 2016, women also represented just 7% of all directors of the 250 highest-
grossing films, however, Wonder Woman marks a change within the industry, and hopefully
producers will hire more women directors in the future. Also, many called Jenkins a gamble
and there were several doubts about giving her a $150m budget, however, through it all she
succeeded in producing a top grossing film, which was praised by critics, and with a sequel
already greenlit.
