Task 7
By Georgia Lonie
Target audience (who I gave the questionnaire to)= boys and girls, 15-17 years old,
Middle and working class, all different ethnicities.
Question 1- What's your
favourite music genre?
I asked this question because it is informative and will
influence me massively in making the decision too decide
what genre of music I want my magazine too focus on. By
asking this I now know what genres will sell well (Pop and
Rock) with the audience and what genres will not (Hip-Hop
and country).
From this pie chart I can see that Rock and pop are both the
most popular genre of music followed by rap and then hip-
hop.
A problem with this question is that it is very open and
ignores that there are many sub genres within these genres,
such as electric pop and indie rock. Also in my results I have
two winners which isn't very helpful as I can only really have
one genre to specialise my magazine on.
Due too the fact that I asked people in my age group this
question I know that they are an audience that want rock or
pop.
This affects my genre massively because it has helped me
influence what type of genre would be most popular with my
audience.
After I asked this question I know that I a rock themed
magazine would be best and it has also made me think about
incorporating another genre to make the target audience
even bigger (e.g. adding a pop- rock tone).

Question 2- Name some of your
favourite bands/ singers
I asked this question because it is informative and help me
massively in making the decision too decide what genre of
music I want my magazine too focus on. By asking this I now
know what type of artists are popular and what styles they
have which will help influence me in deciding costumes and
locations when taking my photos.
From this bar chart I can see that Catfish and the bottlemen
(CATBM) are the most popular artists out of the group of
people I asked with 5 people saying the liked them. CATBM
are a rock band which shows that people do listen to rock and
a lot of people enjoy it. Other popular artists and bands are
Drake, Fifth Harmony and The 1975 all getting 4. This shows
that rock (CATBM, The 1975) is dominating the audience that I
asked which tells me that I should specialise in rock.
A problem with this question and these results is that even
though rock was a high scorer (CATBM- 5) I also had rock
being a low scorer (The Kooks- 2, Artic Monkeys- 2). So this
makes my results a bit of a mix and shows no absolute answer
and makes it difficult for me too decide which genre.
Due to the fact that I asked people of my age group these
questions I know which artists they like which will help me try
and capture the artists style in my photos and that will help
the magazine sell to the audience I asked as it first into what
they like.
This affects my genre massively because it has helped me
influence what type of genre would be most popular with my
audience.
After I asked this question I know that I a rock themed
magazine would be best and it has also made me think about
incorporating another genre to make the target audience

Question 3- What magazines do you
read?
I asked this question so that I knew what style of magazines were
most popular and from those results I can try and incorporate their
style into my magazine which should help it sell.
From this bar chart I can see that most people (9/16) don’t read
magazines. Out of the people who do read magazines though I
know that NME is the most popular followed by vogue. This shows
me that people would rather a magazine with lots going on such as
NME rather then a magazine with minimalistic designs (Vogue).
A problem with this question is that a lot of people have said that
they don’t read any magazines. This doesn’t help my research
because I need to make a magazine and I need inspiration from
other popular magazines my target audience like and if they don’t
like magazines then I know my magazine might not do too well.
This research shows me that my target audience prefer magazines
with a lot going on and bright colours (NME) over basic and simple
magazines (Vogue). This has helped me decide that I want a lot of
eye catching photos and colours on my front cover. It also shows
me that the audience I asked don’t really enjoy magazines so I
should try hard to make them want to but it.
This doesn’t really affect my magazine in terms of genre.
This question has made me think about the style of photos
and how busy I want my front cover to be. It has influenced
me to the idea of having a very packed front cover with lots of
photos and coverlines.

Question 4- Why do you read those
magazines?
I asked this question so that I could find out what kind of
content my target audience like so that I could add it into my
magazine which would help my magazine sell. Also this
question can influence the layout of my magazine, for
example if they want an informative magazine then I know
that I should have more text than photos.
From this pie chart I can see that over a quarter of the
audience I asked read magazines because they are relatable.
This shows me that in order to sell to the magazine I need to
make it fit in and relate too the target audience lives. By doing
this I can make the models wear casual clothes and have a
normal location around them so it makes them look like every
normal reader. Also the results show me that a lot of people
read magazines because they look good. This means that in
order for my magazine to sell I must think carefully about
colour schemes, photos, fonts and other things that affect the
look of the magazine.
A problem with this question is that I got a lot of results that
were all quite close together. This is a problem because it
makes everything equally as important to add into my
magazine in order to help it sell.
This research has shown me that my target audience like
reading magazines for lots of reasons, especially if they are
relatable to their lives and if they look good.
This affects my genre because I now know that in order to sell
the rock genre to the target audience I should help relate it to
them.
This question has now made me think about adding more
casual and relatable photos for my magazine. It has also made
me think about having more interview type articles because
then I can make the artists seem casual and funny which the
readers will be able to relate to and therefore like.

Question 5- Tick what kind of articles
you are interested in
I asked this question so that I could find out what articles I
should add into my magazine to make the readers enjoy it
more. This question has helped influence me into adding
more of an interview type article.
By asking this question I know that the majority of people
(11/16) want interviews of artists and bands. Also it shows me
that some people want reviews in the magazine.
I cant really find a problem with these results or this question
as it has helped me massively to decide what article content I
want in my magazine.
This research has showed me that my target audience want
interviews and reviews in the magazine. This means I can find
inspiration for my articles knowing that these are the popular
things they want to read.
This has influenced my genre because the interviews on
artists I can write can make the artists have a very rock tone.
For example people associate being loud and ‘different’ as
traits of a rock star so in the interviews I can make them seem
that way. Also if I choose to do a review I can make the review
fit into a rock concert scenario. For example I can talk about
loud guitar riffs and mosh pits which would set the rock tone
that I want my magazine too specialise in.
This has made me think about my magazine and has changed
my mind on doing a review article because I can now see that
an interview would suit my audience a lot more.

Question 6- What colours do you
associate with these music genres-
I asked this question so that I could find out the colours I
should incorporate into the magazine to help it fit into my
genre more. By doing this I will be helping the magazine suit
its genre more and also it will help it sell with the audience
because from the colour schemes they will immediately know
if they fit into the target audience of the magazine.
By asking this question I know that the main colours for a rock
themed magazine (My theme) are Black, Yellow and red. Also
I know that if I wanted to add a sub genre into the magazine
e.g. a pop rock theme article then I could add colour that
connote pop such as White, pink and light blue. If I want a rap
edge into the rock magazine then I should incorporate Red
and black colours.
A problem with this question is that not all of the colours suit
together (yellow and pink) so I wont be able to incorporate all
of the colours that people associate with the genre.
This research shows me that the target audience defiantly
associate certain colours to a genre which means that if I want
my magazine to have a rock vibe I have to be very
stereotypical about it.
This affects my genre because it has helped me get an idea of the
colours that connote the rock genre which will help people
associate my magazine into the genre better which may help it sell
better with the target audience.
This question has made me want my magazine to have black and
yellow colours because I know see that that is what people
associate into rock. Also It has made me think more about having a
sub genre added into my magazine so that I can have more colours
going on (e.g. adding pop- rock artists so I can incorporate pink).

Question 7- Do you prefer a lot of
pictures in a magazine or more text?
I asked this question so that I could find out what I should
have more of in my magazine to draw attention to it and
promote sales among my target audience. This question can
also help me decide and influence the layout of the magazine
(more photos than text).
By asking this question I know that the majority of people
(14/16) like more pictures then text in a magazine. This has
helped me know that I should add more photos into the
magazine because they are the most popular.
A problem with this question is that it only tells me that the
audience want photos but not what photos they want so I will
have to guess what photos they would prefer to have. Also it
doesn’t tell me what text the 2 people want.
This research has showed me that my target audience prefer
looking at magazines rather than reading them. This means I
can now plan the layout with lots of photos and fewer texts.
This influences my genre because it means I am going to have
to add more rock looking photos so I will have to think a lot
more about ideas for the photos that help connote the rock
theme.
This question has now made me want my magazine to have
more photos and less text. It has also influenced me into
thinking more carefully about the Mise En Scene of photos
because the question has proven that people look deeper into
photos then I originally though they did.

Question 8- What is the maximum you
would pay for a music magazine?
I asked this question so that I could find out the price
range that my magazine should be.
From this questions results I know that the majority of
people (6) would not spend more than £5 on a
magazine. Also a lot of people would spend £6+ so I
know the price range should be around the £5-£6 mark.
A problem with this question is that a lot of people say
that the maximum they would spend is £5 however
there is also a big proportion of people who wouldn’t
spend more than £4. This is a problem because I don’t
want my magazine to be cheaper than it should be but
also by having the magazine as £5 I would be missing out
on a lot of my target audience.
This research has showed me that the target audience
are not really willing to spend a lot of money on a
magazine. This means that if I want to have a successful
magazine among the audience I asked I need it to be
cheap and worth the money which means using all of the
research I found from other questions.
This doesn’t really affect my magazine in terms of genre.
Because of this question I am now thinking about having
it a bit cheaper than what I was originally going to price
it as.
