What is evidence-based
          instruction?
The integration of professional wisdom with
the best available empirical evidence in
making decisions about how to deliver
instruction
 Program, methodology, and/or practice

 Records of success – reliable and valid evidence indicates
  the instruction works

 Ultimately the practitioner is responsible for determining
whether or not the specific instruction or intervention

Guiding Principles for Learning Design
   for Web based Instructional Strategies
Need to integrate
 Experiential learning
 Experience, Reflect , Theorize, Experiment
     (Kolb, 1984)
 Specify the role of the teacher and/or strategies within
     the process

 Conversational framework
 Identify a more teaching focused approach to the
     learning process
 Specifying teaching strategies to engage the learner
 Emphasize dialogue and adaptation with actions
     generated through interaction, feedback, reflection
     (Laurillard, 2002).

Identifying similarities and differences

Summarizing and note taking

Reinforcing effort and providing recognition

Providing appropriate extension and practice

Producing physical or mental images

Editor's Notes

  • #2: TCASE Web based Instructional Strategies
  • #14: Instructional interventions help a student increase the skills that he or she ‘owns’. This can be done through any number ofsound instructional practices. For example, if a student was having difficulty in spelling, providing extra spelling practicecould be an intervention that would help the student increase his or her own skills in spelling the words that he or she ispracticing.Compensatory interventions, on the other hand, have a different goal. Compensatory interventions compensate, or make upfor skills not currently possessed, allowing a student to complete a tasks at an expected performance level. If theintervention is taken away, the student would demonstrate diminished performance and would not be able to complete thetask at that expected performance level. However, provided the compensatory intervention again, the student’s performanceon the task would increase. The classic example of a compensatory intervention is a pair of glasses. Without glasses, a person’s eyes may not have theability to bring things into focus. As soon as the person puts on his or her glasses, the glasses compensate for the eye’sinability to focus and allow the person to see clearly. Removing the glasses results in diminished performance in the area offocusing.Unlike instructional interventions, compensatory interventions do not increase the skill base of the student. They merelycompensate for the skills not currently possessed by the student and allow the student to complete the task.Note: This information comes directly from presentations created by Brian Wojcik and Nora Bardi (2005) who retain the rightsand permissions for this work. The initial question of remediation vs. compensation was presented by Dave Edyburn and canbe located at http://www.connsensebulletin.com/edyburnv4n3.html.
