to cooperatively meet the needs of their customers by accomplishing a
purpose or goal.
Together

Need for a Team
Why do companies use teams?
 Satisfies the human social need to belong
 Two heads are better than one

 Promotes better communication
 Multiplies the potential of individual members

Teamwork Cycle
Team Building Strategy
Team Building
Four-Step Approach:
 Assess
 Plan
 Execute
 Evaluate
 Team Building: Assess
o Look for strengths and weaknesses in team members
o For a team to be successful, the following characteristics are needed:
 A clear direction that is understood by all team members
 Understood and accepted accountability and measures
Team Building
 Team Building: Plans
o Based on the results of a needs assessment
o Activities should be based on the strengths and weaknesses of the needs
assessment
 Team Building: Execution
o Just-in-time: It is a management strategy that aligns raw-material orders from suppliers
directly with production schedules.
o Continuous improvement
 Team Building: Evaluation
o Effectiveness can be measured based on how well weaknesses identified in the needs
assessment were strengthened.
o Re-administer the needs assessment
o Could result in additional team building activities
Foundations for Team Based Rewards
 Basic Requirements:
 The behaviors that are expected must be communicated to all those affected so
they know exactly what is meant by rewardable performance.
 Both team leaders and team members must be clear about what behaviors are
expected, why they are necessary, and how they will be recognized and rewarded.
Advantages of Team Building
 Identify Strengths and Weaknesses: The strengths and weaknesses of each
member can be identified.
 Direct Towards Vision and Mission: It makes the individuals understand the
organization’s goals, objectives, mission and vision very clearly and motivates them to
contribute towards it.
 Develops Communication and Collaboration: It makes individuals comfortable
and familiar with one another. Collaboration develops trust and understanding among
the team members.
 Establishes Roles and Responsibilities
 Initiates Creative Thinking and Problem Solving
 Builds Trust and Morale
 Introduces and Manages Change
 Better Productivity
Disadvantages of Team Building
 Develops Conflict: Sometimes, the team lacks coordination and understanding among
its members.
 Unproductive or Freeride Team Members: Some of the team members do not
contribute much to team performance.
 May Lead to Non-Cooperation: The team members sometimes lack cooperation and
unity which leads to wastage of efforts and hinders the performance of the team as a
whole.
 Difficult to Evaluate Individual Performance
 Involves Cost: Lot of time, cost and resources are consumed in ensuring coordination,
balance, feedback, decision making and conflict management within the teams formed.
 Accountability and Credibility Issues: In case of failure, it becomes difficult to find
out the reason.
Performance and Rewards
Performance and Rewards
 Nonmonetary Rewards
 Different people respond to different incentives.
 Organization should survey employees before implementing nonmonetary
incentives.
 Set up a system where the employee can select the award that appeals to them.
Recognition
o One of the strongest motivators is recognition.
o There are many ways to ensure that employees are recognized for their
accomplishments and their contributions.
Above all, recognize and reward good performance !
Thank You
