  • #10: Literacy comes from practice . Digital citizenship, for example, is a VERB. Can't teach swimming without a pool - can't model and practice social literacy, citizenship, etc. in theory. Need to practice digital social literacy in digital environments.
  • #11: What schools provide for learning in digital environments: Infrastructure can be a classroom or a digital environment - a virtual world like Quest for Atlantis, a class wiki, Minecraft, etc. Practice is what it sounds like - students need space and time in which to practice concepts (I don't need to tell you this!) Guidance is obvious too - what you provide, but also what students provide you and each other, especially in digital environments Agency is the complement to guidance; all participants need it in order to be effective participants.
  • #12: Interesting parallels between what games designers and social literacy scholars are saying. Game designers say that "meaningful" is what gets us to motivation. At the Games, Learning & Society conference at U. of WI last year, I went to a presentaiton by Prof. Scott Nicholson at Syracuse U, who told us he took a year off from teaching to study what motivates people at MIT, and what he found is that what satisfies, motivates and increases trust and efficacy. Here's what he found. The flip side: "Youth who both experienced being a bully and a victim were found to have the highest risk of suicidal behavior and the worst social/emotional problems compared with[all other] children" (whether victims, bullies, or neither)." --Journal of Adolescent Health
