The Evaluation: 1. In what ways does
your media product use, develop or
challenge forms and conventions of
real media products?
By Dillon Desmond
Films that inspired our film.
We chose to do a crime thriller film and looked at films that
would inspire us to do this.
We chose 3 films that inspired us to create our film.
The three films we chose were Prisoners, SE7EN and shutter
island.
Prisoners: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iJcj0dzvTc0
Se7en: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OEq-4fua3lM
Shutter island:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BZjOOwaiTGQ
We took example from these films to use for our opening
scene. Our group discussed about what shots we should
use like the films that inspired us, however one of our group
members wasn’t present during the filming.
1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or
challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
Question 1: 1st Picture
Our media product develops and challenges forms of real media products as we used a dark
shot of an abandoned building to add mystery and a thrill to the beginning of the film, this
does this as this building is new and appears quite weird to the audience. We used a wide
shot in this to get a bigger picture of what the building looks like. The mise-en-scene in this
scene focuses strongly on lighting and setting as we wanted it to impact the audience. This
was similar to a part of the opening scene in the film “Prisoners” as it was a wide shot of
the building however ours was abandoned and purely dark however the scene in prisoners
was bright which me, Keith and Tufan thought was a good setting to shoot part of our
scene.
Question 1 :2nd Picture
In this picture we used a POV shot
of the protagonists hands. We
used this to add a mysterious
feeling to the film. Also, the use of
having someone laying down with
their eyes closed also adds a
mysterious and slight creepy
feeling to the scene. We got this
idea from se7en as there is a shot
of a pair of hands that don’t look
like a normal pair of hands which
displays a creepy feeling to the
film.
Question 1: 3rd Picture
In this picture we followed the codes and conventions of a thriller film
as we used dark red lighting and a lot of shadows in the background
which could make the audience imagine death and blood which
would apply to this shots the person is dead and the protagonist is
checking their pulse. This is another POV close up shot to add tension
to the film. We focused on the lighting strongly in this scene. We also
followed the codes and conventions more as we used a dark non-
diagetic music to add a sense of tension to the opening.
Question 1 : 4th Picture
We used this picture as we wanted to make the scene seem like it’s a
police station however it’s a school so I took a high angle shot and
Keith edited the picture to make it look like it was a shot taken from a
cctv camera. We also followed the codes and conventions of a thriller
film as I edited the cctv camera to look black and white. We used final
cut pro to edit our film. We used special effects such as black and
white filter and added a camera filter to look less like an shot from an
portable camera and more like a surveillance camera. I got this idea
from the film opening of Shutter island as there is a shot where there
is a cctv camera which gave me the idea for the group to take a shot as
it was from the cctv. Also after this shot there is a shot where the
detective is looking at the interrogation where you can see the cctv
camera in the background
Question 1 : 5th Picture
In this shot we made our media product
develops and challenges forms of real
media products as we made tried to
make the scene an actual police
interrogation room as we made the
mise-en-scene in the scene for the
characters look like the person at the
window is also a police detective. The
editing in this part of the scene is cross
cutting as it swaps from the interrogation
scene and the other detective looking
into the room. Also, the setting of the
room with the window also helped make
the room look like a detective room as all
interrogation rooms contain a window
where other officers can see the suspect.
Question 1 : 6th Picture
In this image we used a over the shoulder shot and for the
editing of this scene we used was shot reverse shot. We done
this to improve the various types of cinematography in this
part of the opening. For this scene we had to improvise and
use shoe laces to tie up the protagonists hands to make it
seem like his under arrest therefore making the protagonist
seem powerless to the audience. My character is wearing a
black shirt and black trousers to show that he is intelligent as
the connotations of a shirt and trousers is power and wealth
however my hair is scruffy which subverts the connotations
by showing that I am a usual person in the film that may have
made a genuine mistake.
Question 1 : 7th Picture
This scene was the other part of the shot reverse shot we
used for the interrogation scene. This mise-en-scene was
better in this scene as the police inspective had a good
costume and also had a police badge on the table. The badge
symbolises the law and make the audience thing that the
detective is doing the right thing. This part of the scene was
pretty similar to the scene in the 6th picture as it was also an
over the shoulder shot. This was similar to the shot of the
inspector in the diner in the film Prisoners.
Question 1 : 8th Picture
Cross cutting was used here as it
swapped from one detective going
out the room and the other coming
in the room. There was a slight
problem with the costume that we
realised after the film which was that
one of the actors was still wearing a
student lanyard which made our
production look slightly
unprofessional. This was partly my
fault as I was also acting and could’ve
informed the other actor about it but
I didn’t realise at the time.
Queston 1: 9th Picture
The mid shot used in this part of the scene showed power
as the inspector in the room and the inspector out of the
room (who you can slightly see which was intentional)
both stare at the protagonist which creates a tense
atmosphere in the audience and also shows to the
audience the roles of power in the film. This scene also
follows the code and conventions of a thriller film as it
has a score that creates tension. The diagetic sound also
creates a tense and mysterious atmosphere within the
audience as they cant tell whether the protagonist is
being truthful or not as no1 knows what is happening.
