Key Learning Goals:
ref. to exam board criteria/NC as
appropriate
… in pupil-friendly format:
1) To have used your ‘discussion skills’
to consider some of the problems
of the 21st Century world.
2) To be able to explain what is meant
by the term‘dystopian novel.’
3) To be able to explain why the novel

dystopia using their senses. They
will incorporate what they have
learnt, showing that they
understand what a dystopia is and
how it is portrayed in their make-
believe world.
Opportunities for Assessment:
Formative & summative
 Creating a list of problems in the 21st century – reinforcing what dystopia
is and what problems are prevalent nowadays
 Examples of dystopian novels/films – this will allow students to think of
other settings in which dystopia can occur
 Quotes of Hunger Games – this will allow students to deduce what
dystopian themes will run through the novel
 Reality TV show table – students will fill in a table writing down the
elements of dystopia in Big Brother and I’m a Celebrity
 Making their own dystopia – students will show that they understand
what dystopia by using their creativity and describing their own dystopian
world
Cognitive challenges:
Desirable difficulties for all abilities; how will students progress?
Creating their own dystopian world – students will learn what the term‘dystopia’
is, and examples will be given in the real world and how it is prevalent in our
society.
EBT strategies:
e.g. APK, reciprocal teaching, collaborative learning, advance & visual organisers,
similarities and differences, goals, repetition and practice, meta-cognition,
feedback, cognitive challenge, subject knowledge, summaries and note-taking
 Collaborative learning – students will work together in various stages of
the lesson, and will also peer feedback their dystopian worlds
