All pupils will understand the idea of
a theme and a motif by the end of
the lesson. They will present their
thoughts and feelings of each motif
to the class.
Opportunities for Assessment:
Formative & summative
 Looking at a list of themes – using their prior knowledge and what they
are reading, they will look at the list to see whether they can relate to any
of these themes.
 Watch trailer of The Hunger Games to note down themes – by using the
trailer, students will note down what themes there might be. This will
allow students to think what themes are relevant.
 Analysis of motifs – students will analyse their motif in groups, and come
up with ideas as to what it means. There will be scaffolding using
questions and visuals for the less able.
Cognitive challenges:
Desirable difficulties for all abilities; how will students progress?
Analysis of motifs – students will work in groups to analyse their motif. They will
have questions to follow, as well as visuals.
EBT strategies:
e.g. APK, reciprocal teaching, collaborative learning, advance & visual organisers,
similarities and differences, goals, repetition and practice, meta-cognition,
feedback, cognitive challenge, subject knowledge, summaries and note-taking
 Collaborative learning – students will work together in various stages of
the lesson, and the main task will focus on their motifs.
