How does it work ?
What do the users like about the Toolbar?
Elements of the Toolbar Visibility Presence Access Search Usability Communication Interaction Actuality Transparancy
How to improve use of Toolbar? Promotion/market the Toolbar (and the Library services) “ How to promote your toolbar “ (do not look at the flashy, tacky language or the terrible images, just get the content out -;)
Where would you like to be visible? Or when do the users expect to see a library service?
Trondheim Question 1 Is it possible to use the toolbar in environments where there is no possibility of installing the toolbar directly on the computer you are using, meaning that the users have it integrated into their roaming user profiles? YES, you can offer it : via the network or on a USB-stick with Portbale Firefox or offer search functionality tailor-made on intranet pages as special search box or Via the top-frame in a browser window
Trondheim Question 2 Have you conducted any user surveys related to the use of the toolbar? If yes, what were the results? (If yes, has it changed the way your users approach the information available from the library?) No user surveys yet. We have (limited) user stats from Conduit. Over 700 users have downloaded the toolbar for their own pc or laptop. Numbers of network for students and staff are additional. Simultanous use per day is growing: 120 This means that 120 people have their browser open with the Toolbar on that day
Trondheim Question 3 What experience have you gained from the introduction of the "new“ toolbar? Was it well received? Yes, it was well received. And well used. But, people want more. We have requests for: Special Toolbars for departments Personalisation (adding/deleting) More user interactions: make something good or very bad and they will come and talk to you!
Trondheim Question 4 How are the resources made available to the toolbar? At this stage the Toolbar is the Library SHOWCASE and the the Conduit software just a start. We add as many usefull Maybe we need to get another application or build on ourselves.
Trondheim Question 5 Do the resources has to go through a LMS (Learning Management System) before they are made available to the users? The Toolbars offers a “Search Through” facility and does not affect original resources
Trondheim Question 6 Does the toolbar use "single-sign-on“ or do users have to authenticate themselves before reaching the actual resources. Because the Toolbar passes the search on, we have been abled to include our proxy-configuration into the search string. Users will get a login when needed.
Trondheim Question 7 Do you have your own development team at the library working on development and implementation of new approaches to dealing with information, in a team of computer engineers developing toolbars and other applications? We have a “Innovation Platform” at the University Library that will start doing research into Toolbars and other application. This QuickSearch Library Toolbar of the Central Medical Library is made by me (… and Conduit-;)
Trondheim Question 8 What is your position in the structure of the university? Do you collaborate with people at your/other universities (or other third parties)? The CMB is the library facility for the University Medical Center Groningen(UMCG). We collaborate with the central University Library (UB) and other Libraries of the University of Groningen. The UB collaborates on local, national and international level with other parties. I have the pleasure to participate in several projects with them.
Trondheim Question 9 Are your library resources integrated into a LMS? Yes, we use Metalib and SFX from Ex-Libris.
Trondheim Question 10 Does the toolbar "co-operate" with Metalib? It is possible to use Metalib strings to make searching in metalib resources possible. We have done that for our QuickSet Medicine and resources that I have not been abled to “activate” via the Toolbar.
